One battery is really well corroded in. I’ve removed as much corrosion as poss
with a needle, but it’s still unremovable. Googling this returns remedies
using vinegar or other acids, hydrogen peroxide etc, but I’m loath to
try these on an old remote.
Can anyone give advice on how they overcame this?

If the battery has "become one with" the contacts of the remote, such that you can't even get the battery out, then you may have to replace the spring contacts anyway.

At which point, brute force and ignorance seems to be the obvious route, with caution not to get chemicals from the battery onto skin/eyes --- the case of the battery may be weak/damaged.

You can get spare battery contacts for AA/AAA style cells, bu8t may need to do some reshaping to get them to exactly fit the remote.

You could try a little vinegar at a time on a cotton bud and use a TePe interdental brush to gradually scrub away at the corrosion. If you have a spare wire guitar string you can pass it under the battery and use it to cheese-wire through the gunk. Or, you could try dental floss but I think that would possibly just fray.

Personally I would crush the body of the battery with pliers to bend and shorten the battery a litle and ease the tension against the spring but please be very careful and wear gloves and eye protection and have some water or saline on hand in case you need to irrigate your eyes.

Got any pictures?

goodolpete,

Did you manage to fix your remote? I have a remote here I'd be happy to send to you.

Simon.

I must apologise for not responding to your replies, but family
affaires have taken up all my time for the last week or so.
Thank you s1h1 for your offer of a remote, but I have solved
the problem. I got a one mm drill and carefully drilled/scraped
off enough of the corrosion to prise the battery out, cleaned up
the spring, put in new batteries and it now works, good as gold.
Again, thanks for your replies.
