The forum search built into phpBB is not, to be frank, the most useful tool, and I know that many people prefer to use Google to search the forums.

I'm toying with the idea of creating a search form for the forums that's linked to my AdSense account, and I'd like to canvas opinions about this.

I prefer to keep the site free of advertising, as I think that's important in retaining independence, and I won't add any AdSense stuff to the rest of it. But using a dedicated search, with AdSense, would allow for easier location of material in the forums, and perhaps provide a small amount of money towards the running costs of the site.

So, it would represent a slight change in the general ethos of the site, but not one that would be apparent unless you used the Google search box.

All views on this most welcome.

Nigel.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I don't personally object to sites with adverts, as long as they don't overwhelm the content. I'm quite happy with the level of adverts on Digital Spy for instance, and what you are suggesting sounds much less intrusive than that.

Ditto again. Is it possible to run both, side-by-side for evaluation? Not that I anticipate any issues.

If it helps keep the forum running (as long as it's not overly intrusive) it has to be good news.

The one(?) good thing about the current search is the strict chronological order of the results. And the other, less-commonly-used-but-still-useful sort order choices. Err... the two good things... (etc.).

Oh, and being able to filter by user ID.

Having said that, the one glaring omission is being able to search by thread title only, which I've sometimes wanted.

As for advertising: fine by me and I think most users would be happy with a smattering of Google ads, based on the user-generated content.

I shan't be removing the existing search, the Google one will run alongside it, so there'll always be a choice.

Anything to improve the search on this site would be great.

And if you only get ads when searching, it's not really a problem

Well, it's not the most elegant, but those who use the Toppy2 skin for the forum (the standard one) will notice the Google custom search button at the top of the page now.

It's also been added to the Site search page, which you can reach via the link at the left, or by going directly to http://www.toppy.org.uk/search.php

... but not via the Search link within the forum, which takes you to http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/search.php instead.

(I use the ToppySideways skin, so don't see the button Wink.)

This is not a complaint - I know how to use Google to search the site anyway. It's just information for anybody else who may be wondering why they're not seeing the Google search version.

I'll update a couple of the other skins later, now I'm sure that it works ok.
