Just spotted this from PVR Junction's twitter stream

Quote:
Just a little teaser here - Topfield will be reasing an all new PVR for the UK #freeviewhd market. Hoping to be out in September

Personally, I've ordered a box from 3view which looks really promising, but has been delayed until July due to factory problems.

I'd be interested to see whether Toppy will include TAP support and all that good stuff. But from what I can see the 3view box is ticking a lot of boxes; one of the pre-production (and independent) testers is comparing it to MyStuff and is impressed so far.

Just like buses.. 2 promising boxes come along at once!!

Because the Twitter stream won't be available forever, here's what it said:

As long as all the good people here tweak the firmware and make new TAPs, the Toppy HD PVR (or whatever it will be called) should be useable. I just hope Topfield have more luck than some of the other companies seem to. Why rush a buggy machine to the market, make it right and you'll get return business.

Any news Nigel ?

Is it true ? What do you know ?

I just hope we have a good base hardware. Some decent vents in the top would be a good start.

Some decent quality capacitors in the PSU wouldn't go amiss either; the number of hardware failures I can see on these forums is beyond a joke. I've got an old Netgem iPlayer and it's still going (admittedly I don't use it much these days.. but I used it way more than the 5800 that failed after 18 months).

I've got a lot of love for the 5800 with the user-written stuff, I just think the quality of the hardware leaves a lot to be desired. Other manufacturers may have similar issues & I'm certainly glad I've got a 2yr warranty with the 3view box I've pre-ordered... IMO all electronics should come with 3yrs as standard.

Your sample of people asking for solutions to problems with their 5800s suggests a high failure rate. My sample of one 5800, still going strong after 5 years, suggests otherwise Wink

My 5800 is also 5yrs and still working. I suspect the capacitor issue is more to do with heat. I have my toppy on tall feet to give a better airflow underneath and it is not sitting on top of another box either. Capacitor life follows the rule of halving every 10C rise. So 10yr life in a cool environment would be 2.5yrs with a 20C rise. You could easily get that by restricting the airflow or putting it on top of another hot box.

I've had a busy few days playing with Freeview HD TVs, but waiting to hear more from Turbosat on this one.

Not really anything to report at the moment, I'm afraid. My impression is that things are at a very early stage, and frankly I think September would be wildly optimistic.

Well this is a shame about the delay. I've just bought my HD this morning, bravia 32" 503 and the toppy looks amazing through quite frankly! Smile But this tv has freeview HD which we get in granada region, and it is stunning so far, watching football at least. Cant wait till F1 next weekend, and DrWho tonight Smile

F1 may be in upscaled HD on the new BBC1 HD channel due to launch this Autumn. More importantly there is a MotoGP HD feed available and space on the current BBC HD channel to show it. But no dice. Crying or Very sad

Oooo, i dont know. I was just hoping.

gomezz, what do you mean due to launch this Autumn? is that different from the current BBC HD channel? where can i read up on what they show?

I did notice today that a lot of bbc hd just had a preview stream rather than programmes.

edit: heres the info i've found about bbc hd. I hadn't really investigated this before tbh.

I'd like to just add though we just watched a recording of Casualty tonight from our toppy and it looked amazing. My wife watched the aussie soaps on fiver after the footy today also, and looked amazing.
