Hi,i'am thinking of moving to an area with poor freeview coverage until 2012 going by post code checker. So getting freeview via dish seems to be the next best option, what would you people recommend receiver model wise that does the same as my 5810 toppy with MyStuff installed to get Freeview channels please? Dont really want to go down the Sky/ITV Freesat road unless you can do what the toppy does!
Many Thanks in Advance!

That would be difficult as freeview is only available via an aerial. You possibly mean Freesat Smile

Then you will not be getting Satellite Smile

Freesat is an EPG and boxes that support it have a lot of restrictions placed on them. Sky tightly control their own boxes. You will get what you have been given with no possibility of modifying it.

Other satellite boxes are availble but are likely to have only a now/next EPG and therefore not much use for recording in the way you would use a box with a full 7 day EPG.

There are possibly other solutions such as building your own box in much the same way as you would build a computer and downloading EPG on a daily/weekly basis from the Web.

Yes Topfield do satellite boxes but unless they are Freesat branded they are likely to only have now and next EPG. Free to Air satellite boxes are not necessarily the same as Freesat boxes[1].

Freesat boxes have a 7 day EPG but in order to have this Freesat branding they are restricted (by licence) in what they can do. As a result a lot of the user configurable functions that you are used to with Mystuff are not, and will never be, supported. The concept of Freesat appears to be that all boxes shall conform to some "simple" interface standard that doesn't require too much knowledge from the user to operate and therefore cannot be configured to do other things.

In order to operate a PVR in a sensible way you will need a EPG that lists programs for more than an hour or two ahead.

Freesat boxes can decode the 7 day Freesat EPG. Sky boxes can decode the Sky EPG. Other boxes rely on the now/next EPG or something that has to be downloaded from a third party. Not all boxes can accept third party information.

[1]
Many(all) Freesat boxes can receive the other 400+ Free to Air channels on the same satellite(s) but, in general, these extra channels will be limited to now/next programme information and the boxes will have an inability to combine the Freesat and non-Freesat modes of operation.

Its the best if you want freesat but depending on your coverage I'd plump for Freeview HD.

There are not too many Freesat box manufacturers out there

Humax are possibly the best

Grundig, Bush, Goodmans are just badges on the same Alba box design and their cheap SD boxes are best avoided. The waters have been clouded slighlty by Argos buying a few of the brand names to stick on their no-name far east imported boxes.

To see what boxes are available try
http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/index.php/digital-boxes
(For me the site fully works with the Firefox browser but not Opera)
