I sent my 5810 back to Peter Tyson where it was under the second year of warrenty. They kept it for a couple of weeks, sent it back saying it had a corrupted hard drive which they had reformatted.

So the machine ran OK for a couple of weeks, but now it has gone back to the same symptoms, starting yestereday.

Anyone got any ideas? PT did not say if they tested the power supply? Is that still the most likley?

Well, PT have had the unit for another month and not found a fault. The main difference is that they are not using any TAPS on the machine. I was always using the latest MyStuff. Has anyone had hard-disk problems running that?

thanks for all your support
(earlier in this thread - please point me to another if i should post somewhere else)
as recommended
i got the firmware installed (5.15.09T)
and
all seemed to be well
plus
i was thrilled by some of the minor adjustments that the firmware made over the topfield firmware (like when you advance a day in the timer menu you went to the same time the following day rather than going repeatedly to midnight) - beautiful
or
so i thought - until last week
when
many of the same problems have been recurring
its
always with series record t
its
usually when the machine is on and playing a recording
and
its almost like it is forgetting to start the recording
because
if you head to the "recordings list" then it immediately starts to record the timed programme (albeit only the last five minutes if you are unlucky)
again
many thanks for your support so far
but
any further help thoughts appreciated

After I upgraded my TF5800 to 5.13.65T last November, I noticed that it automatically bookmarked the start and end of each program (presumably when the "now and next" announcement changes) - and an irritating unreliablity (occasionally truncated recording) disappeared. But more recently it has stopped setting auto-bookmarks, and it has started (occasionally) truncating recordings again. I'm wondering if the firmware has somehow "reverted" to a previous (and more buggy) release? But "system info" still shows the version number as 5.13.65T. I even installed 5.13.65T again, using Toppy Firmware Installer, but no change.
Any ideas, anyone?

Install the MyInfo TAP, run it manually and it will give you a screen of information and create a text log file showing what you have installed (firmware and patches). It will show other possible problems such as duplicate channels etc.

You can download the text log file to your PC and post here if you want confirmation of firmware/patches. MyInfo can be found at TapWorld - or if you used the installer in may already be in the Auto Start folder on your Toppy and it will have generated the log file as you started up.

MyInfo (see Help! in my sig) will tell us whether you still have the [Ab] patch installed. [Ab] is the patch that automatically adds the bookmarks at the signalled start of programmes.

The Extend TAP uses the signals to extend recordings if they overrun, as long as that won't prevent another timer.

Hi Folks,

for any of you 64-bit Windows people a new version of the Toppy Firmware Installer is now available for test. If you have a 64-bit Windows OS, need to upgrade your firmware (or just want to help test) please try the new installer at:

www.toppy.org.uk/~chunkywizard/TAPDownload/ToppyFirmwareLoader64.zip

Please feedback in this thread,

Thanks

I suppose I ought to do the decent thing and give it a try then. Won't be before the weekend now though.

Hi,

I decided to check for newer firmware last night, I was on the Apr 2009 5.13.65T firmware. The firmware loader, which I love by the way - superb job creating it, upgraded me to the Oct 2009 release of 5.13.65T.

I use MyStuff 5.62c, I've not had the nerve to try v6 yet, just in case it messes up the family, and the recommended firmware includes the Ab patch. The description of the Ab patch says that the He patch is essential for the correct working of the Ab patch. From what I can see the He patch was not included in the recommended firmware. I checked the firmware loader log and there was no mention of the He patch being added.

Have I got myself confused here?
Is this something that I should worry about?

Thanks very much in advance,
Cheers,
Mark

A MyInfo log file will tell both you and us exactly what patches you have got installed and help us help you. See Juwlz signature Help to find out how to do it.

You can choose to update to the latest MyStuff Recommended firmware without updating to the latest MyStuff by using the Firmware Loader you've just used. That includes [Ab] and any pre-requisites for it. The [He] patch is not specific to MyStuff, so was included in the base, pre-patched firmware. As ryclark says, a MyInfo log will tell you/us for sure. I suggest you update your version of MyInfo too, as there have been a LOT of changes to that since the version included with 5.62c Wink.

If that's what you've done, everything will be just fine. If not, have another go, as the [Ab] patch and support for it was included in 5.62c anyway, and none of the new MS-specific patches with break 5.62c.

Thanks ryclark, juwlz,

I did indeed update to the latest MyStuff recommended firmware. I just was questioning that the Ab patch was included but the He patch didn't appear to be. You've now answered that, it's included in the pre-patched firmware. I'll try MyInfo anyway because it's good to see what's going on.

Thanks for confirming that MyStuff v5.62c is ok with this firmware.

Another reason for delaying making any further changes, e.g. MyStuff v6.2, is because I want to see whether a problem with remote control responsiveness has been fixed by the new firmware. We've found that on occasion the Toppy will just stop responding to the remote for 15-30 seconds, and then resume working again. I've not identified a pattern to this beyond saying on some days it'll happen one or two times & on others it doesn't.

Cheers,
Mark

Doh. Just realised that the problem I'm seeing is listed in the Bugs section as Bug id: 91 'Remote keypresses are not always recognised', and discussed heavily in this thread

It looks as though moving to MyStuff v6 might improve things. Not sure whether the family would complain if I turned off MHEG.

I'll stop polluting this firmware thread.

Cheers,
Mark

You can use MHEGControl or MHEG On/Off to only switch it on when you actually NEED it; and you won't need it for radio any more in MS 6.x; Red button channel is a normal channel 301 (which you can get EPG for), so you really only need MHEG for Teletext type stuff anyway.

Brilliant, thank you Julie. MHHEG On/Off (aka MHEG Control Lite) looks just the ticket.

Note the Recommended Firmware for the 5810 has now been updated to include [Sx] v10.
