The URL's wrong.

Try http://de.geocities.com/deadbeef55/download/TF5000DisplayV1_53a.zip (no "www").

Don't think so - seems to work for me without them. You do need the double has, though.

New version posted here. Following changes made:

(1) Slightly more logging, notably of IP address etc in main log file.

(2) Additional log file "ToppyCommsLog.txt" generated when comms failure detected. This gives a little more information about where the failure occurred.

If anyone is still have connection problems, could they please post the contents of the latter - should only be around 5-10 lines.

(3) Started to implement R2-D2's suggestion of links to related sites. At the moment double click on the first list of files (rather than single click which toggeles updating) and it will open any url defined by "Help=Http...;" commands. As with to/from the command remains valid until you change it with another value or with "Help=;". See example in the revised MyStuff file.

(4) The save file command now generates a legitimate file.

(5) Few other minor tweaks.

This is great. I've just used it and updated a couple of TAPs (which had updates that I was unaware of) and the MS logo files. Brilliant stuff. I love the way it confirms everything with the user before doing anything, so you never feel out of control.

However, I have a suggestion to make the initial setup less daunting, especially for new users, and also to help people to add new TAPs to their TU setup so they don't get forgotten. I've just been to-ing and fro-ing between my MyInfo Log.txt file, Filezilla (looking at my Toppy's PF folder structure and TAPs), and my ToppyUpdaterList files to get this set up to try, and that gave me the idea (sorry!)

It would be great if ToppyUpdater had a scan mode that could look for TAPs under ProgramFiles and generate as much as it can of the config file(s) automatically.
e.g. in scan mode, create a new ToppyUpdater.ini file, and for each folder in ProgramFiles and all subdirectories containing TAPs, add:
Code:
To:/ProgramFiles/<Folder Name scanned>/;
For TAPs whose information is included in the supplied txt files, add the From: and Help lines for each TAP from the txt file. For "Unidentified" TAPs, don't add to the ini file, but instead create a "starting point" txt file for the user containing:
Code:

##       Help=[please fill in web address for this TAP - remove the brackets!]
##       From: [please fill in address of source - remove the brackets!] ; Filedescription from TAP on Toppy ; File: TAP filename from Toppy
This gives the user a starting point to work from where all they need to do is to fill in the relevant online addresses.

Then, instead of combining the ToppyUpdaterList<whatever>.txt files into a ToppyUpdaterListAll.txt file, use the TopyyUpdater.ini file to do the actual update.

Currently the sample setup files make some assumptions about which folders on the Toppy each TAP is going to be copied to. This approach removes those assumptions, because the information is gleaned from the Toppy itself.

NB: this means that the supplied txt files only need to have information about the TAP name, source and website, plus optional description (if you want something different from the author's own description); the destination folder name and the TAP description can be lifted directly from the Toppy. This makes the web-related bits independent of the user's choice of destination on the Toppy.

The names of the auto-generated txt files (for "unidentified" TAPs) should be checked against existing txt files to prevent name clashes / accidental overwrites of existing files. (But note that with this approach, it is less appropriate to call a file e.g. ToppyUpdaterAutoStart anyway, as the destination info isn't in there any more.)

So the process would be:
Download and install ToppyUpdater on the PC with a selection of sample ToppyUpdater<collection>.txt files (either supplied with TU, or user-contributed).

Run a Toppy Scan from TU to collect info about what TAPs the user has installed, and combine this with the txt files to create a user-toppy-specific ini file; also create txt files for TAPs with unknown sources where the source is commented out, but only needs the user to complete that piece of information.

Optionally exit TU to edit the new txt file(s) to fill in source addresses for TAPs not included in the sample files. (TU could even list what these are and prompt the user to edit the relevant files before continuing with the update.)

Run the actual update from TU, using the newly-created ini file.

Julie

This is getting really close to a (user-maintained) TAP database. Luckily TAPs can be uniquely identified (for most users) by the TAP ID in the file, so it's feasible for people to contribute the bulk of the info for their TAPs (except, of course, their specific choice of install location) and then upload them to a depository somewhere.

... but a scan of the user's Toppy will contribute that bit anyway, after the initial installation.

Now that's a good plan. In fact, co-operating Toppy authors could contribute entries for their own TAPs.

My plan is to allow the control files to define a Toppy location as "!Default!", or similar, and let the user enter the directory he uses for TAPs that have no no predetermined home.

My thinking is that the less experienced really only need Auto Start and one other directory to keep their TAPs in, and inis and the like can go either there or in Settings. The type of people who have TAPs dispersed across directories such as "Tools", "TapLauncher", "Seldom Used", "Games" etc should be capaple of amending the author's control file appropriately.

The difficult bit is choosing a default settings for "!Default!" and getting TAP authors to encourage its use for non-Auto Start TAPs that don't mind where they live.

Does that sound sensible?

Exactly -- an entry could be specialised to the user's setup by auto-correcting the Toppy path.

I think the Wiki does not allow for anything but image files to be uploaded, which is a shame because that sort of thing would be ideal.
