There are replacements for hyperterminal. Realterm is free.

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

Looks like I'll try and get a very old laptap working again - Hyperterminal isn't part of vista anymore so windows 2000 might be a bonus!

You will probably need a null modem cable - readily available from nearly everywhere for a couple quid.

Example
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Serial-Null-Modem-Cable-DB9F-DB9F-RS232-CABLE138-/260586520588?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item3cac2ac00c

Check if you want male or female connectors (or a mix of both)

Good news - the old laptop has a serial port. Bad news - won't boot.
Good news - null modem cable (1.8M) arrived today, 18hrs after ordering for 1.95
Bad news - now need a usb<=>serial converter.
They vary hugely in price. Prolific PL2303 chip seems important.
Do I get a null modem type (if they exist) or use the modem cable as well?? Specific recommendations most welcome.

A standard USB to Serial converter provides you with a serial port to connect your null-modem cable to.
