I have been the grateful recipient of useful software and patches from the members of this site so I thought I would share something I have written that I find useful in my set up.

SlugStream is a glorified VLC file chooser. It allows a file on the Toppy to be directly streamed via FTP using VLC and either displayed or transcoded to MPEG PS file with a extension of .mpg suitable for playing via other programmes or burning to DVD.

I use this programme to select files to watch on a second TV using the Hauppage MediaMVP (http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/products/data_mediamvp.html). The MediaMVP does not support .rec files but is quite happy to play a file that is being actively transcoded from the Toppy.

PC, Slug and MediaMVP are connected together on my network using Devolo HomePlugs (good devices if somewhat expensive).

You can download from here (read the SSHelp.html file) :-

http://rfoxss25.sitesled.com/SlugStream/

I have only tested this on Windows XP Home SP3. It is written using wxWidgets so will probably port to Linux (I'll give it a go if anyone is interested). It may even Port to Mac but I don't have access to one.

Meant to include this from the help file also :-

Slugstream requires a suitable device such as the NSLU2 (aka Slug) connected to the Toppy running ftpd-topfield and VLC installed on the same machine as SlugStream. For real time viewing the Toppy USB download patch/TAP is probably necessary (I've never tried it without).

This looks useful. Can you tell me if it can be configured to use a non-standard port for ftp, such as 2021?

A Linux version would be great to use on my Eeepc Smile

It can now ! updated version with FTP Port added as a Setting available from the link above.

eePC may be possible, have you got VLC running on it ?

VLC uses wxWidgets so if it ports then this should. My Unix programming skills are 8 years more rusty than my Windows ones (which are pretty rusty!) so it may take me a while to figure it out.

This looks really good, couple of suggestions.

Could you hide files ending in .del, e.g. Family Guy_080809.rec_200808141928.del (this is a MyStuff thing).

Is there any way of making VLC open maximised (not full screen)?

I have not played with streaming via VLC for a long time but it seems to work really well, must be all the work R2 has done. It is now a very viable option for our house.

Yes I have version 0.8.6a running and I currently cut and paste link locations from Firefox to VLC to see the recordings on the Eeepc. Your solution would be much better.

I have just tried using the new version with port setting. The port setting works for the file browsing but from the VLC diagnostics / Messages, it seems it is not being passed to VLC correctly.

Updated to (hopefully) fix the port number issue.

Can you point me to details of how you installed VLC on the EeePC.

I'll look into exposing more VLC options via the Settings menu.

The directory brower window allows you to select the directory where you want the .mpg file saved if you are not viewing. It's probably redundant now you can set that via Settings (it hails from the days before the app supported settings i.e. earlier this week).

I'll be away from an Internet connection for the next few days.

I'll add a vote for an eeePC version too Wink
I've installed the Windows version, and for some reason, it can't connect to my Toppy Sad

Have you changed the settings to the correct name or IP address of your Slug? Do you have a firewall getting in the way?

Would it be possible to use your program with Aldarins "FTP server for Topfield"

I would be surprised if it did not work.

My mistake. I assumed the gobbledegook beginning LK in the default config file meant it had cleverly detected my own Slug. Now I've changed that and the path to my recordings on the PC (probably not needed if I'm just streaming?), and set VLC just to stream, it's working fine thanks.

I wonder if a setup "wizard", or at least being forced to set up SOMETHING on first run, rather than using somebody else's slug name, path, etc. might be a good idea if you plan on developing this further though?

Julie

I'm not having much success using SlugStream. It is connecting OK and showing all files in DataFiles (eventually - resisting the temptation to click on DataFiles - it seems to crash SlugStream sometimes) and clicking 'run' on a highlighted file does start VLC. The problem is that VLC shows the selected file at the bottom of its screen and the progress bar goes along, but there is no sound or picture.
Are there settings in VLC which should be altered-

what did you alter in VLC 'set just to stream' Juwlz?

SlugStream also doesn't like to be asked to show the TopField directory listing whilst it is streaming (or in my case, not) saying:-

Couldn't change to DataFiles directory - Check Slug/Toppy

Maybe this is to be expected?
