I've just stumbled on a routine that checks the current playback stream to (I think) see if it's encrypted. Trouble is, it does this continually, and at least once a second, and in a rather crappy way (reads from the file again rather than checking the buffer). Which coincides with stuttering I've heard while playing back a recording and doing USB transfers at the same time. I imagine this is for partially decrypted recordings, but I never have an encrypted stuff and I imagine many people here don't, either.

Has anyone else noticed this? NOP-ing out the call works for me, so a patch would be able to solve this, if there's interest.

I can't say I've ever noticed a stuttering other than during a low memory crash. I'm not normally watching the Toppy whilst doing USB transfers though.

I would be interested in a patch.

I sometimes

record x2
playback
and USB transfer

at the same time, and the poor toppy is working its balls out.

This may improve things.

I have noticed this in the past, but it seems to have gone away recently, I think low disk space was pushing it over the edge. I also got an annoying interruption in playback yesterday when it came up with "service is encrypted" and dumped me out of playback, I guess this would avoid this as well. So count me in.

Would it possibly help usb transfer speed by reducing overall CPU load ?

Possibly, but the stuttering isn't constant. I suppose it might help maintain a better rate, though.

Here's a [Ps] PlayNoStutter patch which can be dynamically applied by HDFWv2, so you can easily test whether it makes much difference.

What about the issue where ffw/frw/jump on encrypted channels (Setanta) causes a few seconds of interruption. Is this related, and more importantly - can it be patched Wink ?

Glen.

I'm sorry but I've no idea at all -- I don't use encrypted channels. The patch above keeps the initial check on starting a playback, which I think might still enable encrypted recordings to be played. It removes the periodic checks, so I think this may cause problems for partially decrypted recordings, but it could also affect the winding -- give it a try?

I'll record something on Setanta and have a play when I'm feeling brave.

Did Glen (or anyone else) ever test this TAP with encrypted recordings?

If it works ok with encrypted recordings then it sounds as it it ought to be a benefit to everyone...

Thanks,

Well, its been a while, but I've checked my patch list and I seem to have applied it so it's either helping and/or not causing any problems. Sorry I can't be any more help.

Glen.
