Domed caps are a sure sign of failure, and your 3.3v rail is buggered.

I recommend that you unplug the Toppy from the mains completely to prevent any damage to other components. You might as well replace all the caps at the same time.

A couple of folk on here can replace the caps for a small fee. You can even ask them to supply you with the caps so you can replace them yourself if you wish.

I'd just like to thank MikeyP for his excellent service.

I received my PSU back from him within 2 days and my Toppy is now back to its former glories.

If anyone is thinking about getting theirs repaired, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him - thanks again Mike.

We have three TF5800's in the family at home - all at least 5 years old. They still all perform well on a regular basis.

Reading this thread it seems that I can expect problems with the PSU (capacitors) any time now.

For those knowledgeable users - should I just get it over with now and replace all the capacitors or should I wait until they start exhibiting problems?

Tony.

There is always a danger of the HDD and/or mainboard being damaged when the PSU voltages go high as the capacitors fail. If you change the capacitors now, you should be OK for at least another 5 years.

Many thanks for the prompt response Andy. Looks like a weekend with the soldering iron is coming up!

Is anybody selling repair kits with the right capacitors in it?

Or maybe people just use 6 of the same capacitor?

With a multimeter that was seriously out of calibration I didn't want to start renewing capacitors. So I borrowed a friend's instrument which is more accurate and measured the following voltages:
Code:
5.07
12.42

30.67  <--30.65-30.70
24.64  <--24.60-24.71
17.17  <--17.17-17.19
7.61
5.07
3.36
15.71

There was some fluctuation as shown above. The 22V connector was showing mostly 24.64, although at one point the drive was rattling and the voltage jumped up to 24.71 or more. Other readings were more stable, especially where I only show a single reading above.

Shall I leave well alone, drop in my new 1TB drive and enjoy, or can you see something amiss with my measurements?

Those voltages are OK. The 24V rail is wrongly marked 22V and usually is around 24.5V (it's not used in the non-satellite Toppies anyway).

If your Toppy is about 3 years old, as indicated by your join date, it will be OK for while but, if it were me, I would replace the capacitors soon, rather than risk a failure later when your HDD is full of cherished recordings.
