Hi,
Was just wondering. Has anybody tried to connect the Toppy to an xbox via usb, then use the xbox ethernet connection to link with the main PC or router. It would seem that a modded xbox can have a Linux OS installed and even communicate via a wireless bridge.

Im going to be modding my xbox soon and running Cat5e between TV area and my main PC via my router to use for streaming media. Just thought it sounded like a good idea to connect the Toppy to the xbox instead of messing around with active USB cables [10-15mtrs].

If not possible, has anyone tried usb-rj45 adaptor and using CAT5/6 for the main run of cable then back to rj45-usb?

Im guessing some enlightened person/s on here has already tried this?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

Thanks for the reply,

Geez.... Shocked That links led me to this one http://www.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1688 .....which is complete gobbledegook to me...I can install x-dsl linux im sure without too much trouble, but compiling and stuff like that, absolutely no chance!!!

Looks like active USB then?

I only really wanted to link to the net to get the Radio Times EPG and transfer the odd .rec file for burning to dvd, seems like a helluva hassle.

Cheers

Paul

I already do EXACTLY what you want to do with my xbox.

It runs rt2mei, it runs ftpd-topfield and I can grab .recs over FTP. It's behaves just the same as a slug.

I'll send you EVERYTHING you need if you want. You'll be up and running in double-jiff time.

pm me your email address and we can take this off line.

Cheers,

BB

No, I can't. Not that I'm saying it couldn't be done though. I guess you could set up a streaming server running under linux on the xbox, and if it was very clever, and could serve up video files as it dragged them off the Toppy, then I guess it could be possible.

As far as I'm concerned:
a) Probably beyond the scope of my ability
and
b) Certainly beyond the scope of my interest

Are there *any* apps (either PC or Linux) that could do this??

Thanks Bawbagg

I only ask because I saw this

Apparently people do mod their boxes to be media servers, and I was toying with the idea of getting a secondhand one and exploring its potential with the toppy / slug / wireless network.

Bawbagg, can I ask exactly what it is you can send the original poster?

Is it, essentially, an iso image that they can burn that turns the Xbox into a gateway for the Toppy?

If so, if it's pretty much plug and play, we could probably see our way to making it available as a download here, provided that fits within the terms of the various license agreements.

Nigel.

Yeah - it is pretty much exactly that - an ISO for x-dsl that just works with the rt2mei stuff, and a handful of supplementary apps that need dropped onto xbox HDD that are read by x-dsl on booting. I think these are all public domain (vnc, ssh, php) but I'm not so sure about licensing, gnu and all that.

I could easily knock up a quick guide to accompany the download.

I guess there's nothing that needs to not be in public domain. Total filesize is about 60MB.

Will I prepare this??
[edit]
actually - before I do this, let's find out if there is enough interest first. It will be less work for me to support a few users than to have to do a load of prep and documentation!! I am a lazy git. Very Happy.

@alfablue

I have xbmc on my xbox. My xbox is hooked up to my plasma with component cables and runs in 720p hidef. Xbmc is a fantastic piece of software. I wholly recommend getting one for tinkering. It makes a grand job of upscaling divx files for watching on plasma Wink. With the xbox hooked up digitally to my amp I also get dolby digital 5.1 from it. Very Happy.

However, for streaming purposes, xbmc is generally the client, streaming from a pc/samba/http server. Additionally, xbmc can't talk directly to Toppy - xbox needs to be running tftp-daemon under xbox linux. You'll still need a separate server (either windows, linux or mac) to hook up to Toppy, and "cache" your .rec files.

i don't know if this is any help to this thread, but when i'm running outta space on my toppy i transfer rec files and process (a very quick 5min process) them to .ts files and i watch via xbmc via NSLU2 (unmodded atm) hooked up to 2x 300gb ExtHDD without having to have my computer on (its a noisy beast)

That's an interesting use of xbmc. I've always suspected the video output stages of the xbox to be fairly inferior - how is the quality when compared to directly viewing the .rec on Toppy?? (That said, I recently hooked xbox to plasma via component, and switched it into HD 720p mode, and it looks a whole lot better than it used to.).

Of course - the major hurdle in that particular approach will be the time required for transfer of files off the Toppy. I'm toying with the idea of an NSLU2 just to get USB2 connection to Toppy - with the xbox USB1.1 it's a painful experience to transfer .recs.

Cheers,

BB

Bit of a newbie on the Toppy networking front and was waiting for my local Staples to have the slug on offer, then saw reference to connecting to xbox, which lead me to thsi thread.

As I've got my xbox on the LAN running XBMC (its actually sitting rith next to the Toppy so location isnt an issue). Can you send me details of what I need to get the Toppy on it also ? Thought I'd hijack this thread rather than start another!

Cheers in advance

I assume you don't currently have any form of linux running?

You'll need to make an xbox-toppy USB cable. Instructions are available at the xbox-linus site. Download x-dsl v0.5 (google for xbox linux, then follow the links), and burn a CD with the ISO. My xbox normally boots into XBMC, but when I want to update the MEI file I just shove the x-dsl disk in.

I'll prepare some documentation and file that can be downloaded (Nigel has volunteered to host it here).

Basically, you run ftpd-topfield on your xbox, and your xbox acts as a gateway. In addition, I have some scripts that run rt2mei at bootup. Works like a dream.

Cheers,

BB
