Local TV (yes I know it can cause issues) seems to be a mess.

That's an understatement, local transmissions are usually low power, so bad reception is not uncommon, and your hard disc could easily be wiped.

@jimi

I used to get my transmitter information from DigitalUK.co.uk but this has morphed into the site I am now using. Basically, this site maintains a database showing the transmitters and scheduled changes to the muxes. This is the only definitive source I have found over the last 2 years and I believe it is what the industry is working to.

I'm not bothered about whether or not it advises the correct transmitter for a specific postcode - this will obviously be dependent on the aerial, it's orientation and hills/trees etc. i.e. do as you do and use the transmitter that suits you best

@anthony2l
I didn't realise that the Local mux was also not available on the TV; might be worth sending them a message to say that it has disappeared (just in case they think it is working)

I wasn't criticising your use of the site, I use it myself for transmitter retune info, it seems to be consistently accurate in that respect. Cool

It was more to raise awareness for anyone using it to check which transmitter is best for them that it's predictions aren't gospel

To add to my earlier post it seems that the Muxical games have rendered my Log36 aerial impotent.

I'm in a bit of a hole, literally and it took a lot of experimenting to get good reception from Waltham for all channels I wanted. Alternatives were Sutton Coldfield (wrong region though) and Nottingham - but a block of houses and trees were in the way.

I've just tested from the TV forcing for instance Ch55 (so I can get BBC News HD) and the signal now is too weak to autotune. Ch41 is just not there.

When the weather is a bit warmer I'll see if Nottingham is any better on the new frequencies, else I'll have to investigate a new aerial.

I've just updated Freeview.dat and Freeview(Scotland).dat (primarily because ITV3+1 has changed LCNs).

While editing these files, I have also removed all RRC= lines and set all "RTcode"s to zero. (There is no longer a Radio Times feed so the RRC and codes are meaningless.
I would have liked to have removed the RtCode fields completely and make the StartTime and EndTimes optional but CO complains that the fields are missing.

Just updated Freeview.dat and Freeview(Scotland).dat:
* Sky Arts available on channel 11 **NEW**
* Pick moves from channel 11 to 34
* BBC Four Scotland moves from channel 68 to 55
* Together TV moves from channel 88 to 87
* Smithsonian moves channel from 57 to 56
* Merit and Pick+1 now no longer available on Freeview

No changes to FvTxData

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Major changes due on 4th November 2020
Basically, all channels between 24 and 54 will drop down by 1 to make room for BBC Four to use 24 in Scotland.

As far as I can tell, this also affects the LCN numbers in the rest of the UK.
I won't be able to modify Freeview, dat to handle this until the change has been implemented and I can see how the changes impact the file

I use an old Vista laptop to run TopManager and retune my Toppy. This does not connect to the internet, so I update the data files on the Toppy (Freeview.dat, FvTxData.tsv, logo.dat and smlogo.dat) manually using Altair. However, I see in Geoff's post of 7/3/20 that TopManager also requires a copy of FvTxData on the PC, but I cannot find where it should go. Could somebody tell me the location of this file please.

Many thanks

John

When I first read your post, I initially thought that you wanted to know where it is stored on the toppy (in \Settings) but on rereading, I see you want to know where it is stored on the pc.

The location on the toppy is dependent on your version of Windows.
Run TM, press F1 (for help) and select "Uninstalling" This describes how to find the TM files so that you can delete them. Obviously, here you just need to use this information so that you can find the folder and replace the FvTxData file.
The replacement file needs to be given the same file extension as that already in the directory (EMJB used a different extension for CO than the one I was already using for TM)

Another option is that you always use CO to perform retuning (then TM doesn't need to access it's own obsolete copy of this file).
Having said that, most of the transmitter changes have now taken place (until they change them again) so you might not have to change the version on the PC that often

Re the internet connection, you can probably set up the laptop so that it can use wifi. Alternatively, assuming you have access to the router i.e. you are not using next door's, buy a long temporary cable that you can run from the router to the laptop.
Another option might be to temporarily reroute the cable going to the main pc.
Or you could just continue as you have been!

Geoff
