Excellent service from Geoff, well recommended. Quick, extremely reasonable and good communications. Recovered our disk with no noticeable loss of recordings. In fact the disk is probably better than before because he added a few extra useful TAPs.

And just in time for Christmas.

Many Thanks.

Hi Mark

Many thanks for the endorsement and confirmation that all is well.

Merry Christmas

I have what appears to be one very corrupt TF5800 drive.

I was going to have a look at it with TopfHDRW but I'm worried about the risk of doing more damage, though I assume no writes are performed without user intervention.

However the other question is whether the TDM is likely to result in a better outcome.

The drive is a Samsung SV1604E/OMD 160GB. The names of the recording are there but all at small or zero file sizes. The Toppy has been run, or attempted to be run, in an unstable state (see my other message in General.)

As you surmise, running TopfHDRW on it won't damage the disk unless you say you want to save the changes.

Obviously, what is recoverable on the disk is dependent on how long the disk has been in use after the corruption e.g. a timer may have triggered a recording or you might have timeshift enabled (this lso records to disk). In practice, nearly all the recordings are recoverable using TDM and they also have names related to the recording (TopfHDRW is likely to give them names which give no indication of the content)

Suggest you install GSmartControl (free) on your pc and check the status of the disk (when it is connected to the pc).
Problem areas will be shown in red.

Cheers
Geoff

Thanks Geoff.

Gsmartcontrol gives little away other than to say the drive appears to be there.

To be clear the TV program names were available both via the Archive button with a lot (maybe all) shown also under Bad Files, and via Antares.

The Toppy was always left on so buffering, and no doubt attempts at recording.

TopfHDRW (well TopfHDDoctor as the former fails with an error message) gives:

TopfHDRW seems to be reading the disk so the hardware is probably ok(ish)
When it says "subscript out of range" you can click on Ignore (but it typically will fail immediately with another range error).

TDM should be able to process the disk - it really depends on how much overwriting has been done by the time shifting. Typically, it is only the clusters at the start of the disk that get overwritten. Unfortunately, this is where the file allocation tables are stored (and usually the directory info also); most recordings are typically further up the disk and can be recovered.

I had a hard drive failure a couple of weeks ago (see my message on Computer connections ~ Power Cut Crashed Hard Drive - Seek Advice to Recover Data thread). Immediately after posting that last week, I heard from Geoff about his TDM programme which can recover data in such situations. He has managed to recover the vast majority of the TV and Radio programmes on the drive I sent to him (and there were a LOT of programmes), so I would like to thank him for doing it so quickly and at no more than nominal cost.

At the same time, andyfras repaired my PSU by replacing the capacitors. I now have the Toppy up and running again without problems, something I thought might not be possible, and all within a week of posting about it.

So, thanks again to Geoff and Andy for offering such good advice and service.

Yet another satisfied customer.

Faced with an unexpected request by the Toppy to format the hard disk, I thought I'd find out if Geoff was still providing his rescue service - it would be nice to have the 1.5TB of recordings back, but not a matter of life and death as I hadn't thought it worth the hassle of backing up that much data. But of course there was lots of unwatched stuff on there, useful for a contagion event!

Well, I posted the disk off on Wednesday afternoon and it was back on Saturday morning with almost all the files recovered. A few losses occurred because an errant recording had scribbled over some data files and all of ProgramFiles.

MyStuff was reinstalled by Geoff, leaving me to add my other favourite taps which I had backed up.

It's now running smoothly, though I am staggered to find that MyStuff has already scheduled two films to record that were completely lost. Seems to suggest that MyStuff looked in its list of stuff, realised some were missing but had not been deleted, searched and found them to be aired again next week and marked them to record. I didn't have to lift a finger!

Anyway, Geoff is TopChap, fast, communicative, effective, affordable and, dare I say it, saved my Bacon.

@Black Cloud and GeorgeB

Many thanks to you both for your great feedback; it's always nice to know that my recovery worked.
