For the last several weeks some channels have started using a larger, more rounded subtitle font. Ever since then I've found the Toppy has trouble displaying it correctly. Some lines are fine, but others will come up in a sort of yellowish inverse-video effect with bad anti-aliasing. I don't know how it works internally, but it could be a bad colour palette mapping.

Anyone else seeing this, or is it specific to my configuration? It seems particularly noticable on 5 USA, but that may be coincidence.

I don't use subtitles

Are you running the FontManager tap? (it is not shown in your signature)

Some channels use different text colours to show who is speaking; is it just that the broadcaster has chosen a particular bad colour (as CCS suggests, see if same on your TV)

Just watching “The Motorway” recorded from channel 5 last night, which has these every so often.

Thanks for the responses.

Sorry, my sig is out of date. According to MyInfo, apparently I do have FontManager. I don't know what it's for, I guess it was added by the MyStuff installer.

The problem doesn't appear to be related to subtitle colour. It can affect one line of a two-line sentence by the same speaker. All the normal colours of white, blue, yellow, green, pink get shown ok at one point or another.

The TV has no problem rendering the subs, but then this isn't a conclusive test. Trying several different channels on the Toppy live yesterday evening only showed the problem once or twice in maybe half an hour. I have recordings that show it every few seconds.

Thinking this may be related to playback vs. live, I tried recording a few minutes of the live programmes. Playback showed no more problem than live.

So it seems very variable, maybe per channel, maybe even per programme. If anyone would like to check, Law & Order SVU on 5 USA seems particularly affected.

I will try disabling some TAPs when I have a little more time.

Just tried watching 5USA and can see what you are experiencing,. I didn't watch for a long time but the TV seemed fine whereas the toppy occasionally showed issues when the text should have been green.

I tried disabling the running FontManager but that didn't have any effect. You could try using the remote to move FontManager.tap from Auto Start to ProgramFiles and try again after a reboot. Alternatively, use TM or Antares to rename the FontManager.tap to FontManager.pat and reboot. I doubt that it will make a difference. Remember to reverse the move or rename after testing.

Assuming eliminating FontManager doesn't improve things, you will just have to live with it as no-one has the knowledge or inclination to fix it.

Ah, thanks guys, at least it's not just me. Wink

I don't routinely use subtitles, so it is not a problem as such. Just thought I'd see if it was something I'd done, or whether anyone knew how to fix it.

I'll try disabling FontManager, maybe some other TAPs too when I have time to experiment. Since it seems to be channel dependent, it's possible it might just fix itself when the owner of those channels happens to change their setup. Well, we can hope!

Might be worth trying a different skin in MyStuff see if that changes anything.?
