Just updated Freeview.dat and Freeview(Scotland) .dat

This is primarily for Scottish viewers (to cope with BBC FOUR shifting from LCN 82 to 6Cool but both files contain updated records for Together TV (8Cool and PBS America (91)

I've just updated Topmanager (still on XP!!) and then took the opportunity to update the offered Freeview.dat and FvTxData.tsv in the expectation that I wouldn't get the error message re Freeview.dat, but to no avail, Channel Organiser still complains as well as showing a couple of mux numbers (no descriptions alongside)

FvDataErrors.txt shows:

Code:
// Errors in 'Freeview.dat' detected by Channel Organiser B2.1 on 10/1/2020 at 14:50
// These will cause problems with status display, config files, and/or future LCN changes

LCN 31 appears to have moved to LCN 796 - the entry for the former should be changed

LCN 49 appears to have moved to LCN 791 - the entry for the former should be changed
LCN 50 name should be changed from 'Sony Movies Christmas' to 'Sony Movies Classic'
LCN 54 appears to have moved to LCN 31 - the entry for the former should be changed
LCN 55 appears to have moved to LCN 54 - the entry for the former should be changed
LCN 65 appears to have moved to LCN 794 - the entry for the former should be changed

Mux name is apparently wrong for LCN 49 - it should be COM4
Mux name is apparently wrong for LCN 212 - it should be COM4

No 'Freeview.dat' entry found for 'Yaaas!' on LCN 212

// Based of version of 'Freeview.dat' last updated at 15:30 on 27/11/2019

I'm tuned solely to Waltham MUXs.

I had some similar issues last year that you helped out with but can't put my hands on it, but it may have been trying to updated the two data files manualy and not through TopManager.[/code]

Thee was a load of movements on Tuesday which is why the Freeview.dat is out of date I guess.

@anthony2l

Thanks for your post showing errors in Freeview.dat - I have just uploaded updated versions of Freeview.dat and the Scotland variant.

Please note that these files are invariably out of date and, as it takes me getting on for 2 hours to update them, I really only intend to do this when there are significant changes e.g. to the main channels.

Errors in the Freeview.dat file typically mean that it could do with editing rather than it being a showstopper.
In general :-
1) Entries above (or moved above) 750 can be ignored (this is just a temporary parking space for a old channel variant before it ceases broadcasting)
2) A change of name can typically be ignored (the toppy will use the new name)
3) "Mux name is apparently wrong" can be ignored
4) "No entry found for" can be ignored (it just won't be subject to filtering e.g. excluding Shopping)
5) "LCN appears to have been moved" can be ignored if you are using MyStuff (CO rewrites the EPG files to reflect the change - and these get refreshed anyway after about 20 mins). When MS is not used, they might be necessary as CO has to adjust any timers relating to the moved LCNs.
6) Entries relating to channels you intend to delete can be ignored

So in this case, the messages could probably all be ignored

TopManager uses a different mechanism from CO and generally doesn't care about occasional wrong fields in Freeview.dat

Cheers
Geoff

Thanks Geoff. I have generally ignored errors reported in the past and it is rare to install the new files without some error. In fact I think I went a few years not even knowing how to update them.

Yesterday I put the new versions on, noted the errors, correct Freeview.dat and probably for the first time had No errors reported on Channel Organiser.

To be honest I don't know what Top Manager uses Freeview.dat for or what impact any errors have - it is just comforting to have a clean update with no errors rather than be concerned whether something will bite me when I'm not looking.

Thanks for that, so March 4th then!

I've given up relaxing with anything to do with digital whether it be tuning, computing, smartphone, banking, motoring etc. Life I'm sure was simpler.

But I don't have an issue with retuning when needed - the TV normally tells me something needs doing and Channel Organiser is brilliant for the Toppy which is tuned to Waltham only. It is too hard to try and restrict the TV so I leave it to its own devices.

Where I am unclear is the need/relevance of Freeview.dat and FvTxData.tsv and when to worry about reported errors from CO, though as mentioned I seem to have survived years without updating them with no noticable ill effects.

As many as 6 mux's will be changing, so FvTxData.tsv and maybe feeview.dat won't be too impressed!

I've just updated the following files:-
* Freeview.dat (02 Mar 2020)
* Freeview(Scotland).dat (02-Mar-2020)
* FvTxData.tsv (04-Mar-2020)

Please note that several transmitters have a retuning event today and FvTxData.tsv assumes this has already occurred i.e. possibly wait till later in the day before retuning using this file.

Looking at FvTxData.tsv, there appear to be only a few retuning events in the coming months i.e. most of you shouldn't need to retune for a bit.

Geoff

The new files worked well and thanks for what must have been a lot of effort with such major changes.

Local TV (yes I know it can cause issues) seems to be a mess. Notts TV (Waltham) according to https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Waltham is on 26 but that channel isn't even picked up by the TV direct, Ch29 being the lowest Ch No found.

Freeview.dat has LTM as 41 so Channel Organiser detects empty Mux. The service still exists - https://nottstv.com/about/. Maybe someone doesn't know about the Mux musical chairs!

The tables are updated by scraping the data from the https://www.freeview.co.uk/ site (put in your postcode to get your details and then scroll down past the channel logos and click the "Detailed view" link)

The LTM should have changed to 41 on 4th of March so, if it is still on 26, I suggest you edit your copy of FvTxData.tsv (in the \ProgramFiles\Settings\ on the toppy). The easiest way to do this is with TopManager:- Connection| Open
Connection| Browse
Open the Settings Folder
Select the FvTxData.tsv and click Edit in top Menu (or Rightclick and select)
Find the Waltham entry and change the 41 to 26

Please note that this assumes you are retuning using the ChannelOrganiser.tap
(TM| PcControl doesn't use this file - it has it's own copy stored on the pc disk)

I have my doubts about the accuracy of the Freeview postcode checker. If I enter my postcode & house number it tell me that my predicted transmitter is Blackhill when in reality I use Craigkelly, its much closer. We don't get a decent signal from Blackhill and looking around the houses in the area the majority of aerials are aligned the same as mine (at Craigkelly)
My in-laws stay at the other end of the town and they are also on Craigkelly so I don't think it's isolated to my local area. Makes me wonder if there are others around the country in the same boat ? is the postcode checker is incorrect ?

Thanks Geoff, I wasn't suggesting you'd done anything wrong. One site says one thing, another site says another. My aerial points to and mainly only gets Waltham and to check my definitive channel reception I do a Signal Test on the TV (not the Toppy) as this looks for everything including of course HD channels. Neither Ch26 nor CH41 show up where I am nor where my sister is. So the LCM has gone AWOL as if someone at Notts TV hasn't flicked the switch. My first thought was that Notts TV had died a death but it is still there (on-line anyway).

If and when it appears on the TV I'll track down the MUX and if different to your setting I'll amend the data files, then retune the Toppy, and yes I use CO.
