Hi, does anyone have a fully working 5810 remote for sale.
My 89 year old Mum is struggling with 2 remotes where certain keys don't work. By using a combination of keys from each remote she can still get the toppy to work.
I have tried her with my Logitech remote but she is finding it too confusing.

Mine got like that. I levered the two halves apart with a screwdriver, washed the membrane between them in mild soapy water, dried it thoroughly,
Put it together again and bingo, it worked

Thanks Pete, I'm plucking up courage to attempt opening one up and cleaning it.

There are quite a few web pages on cleaning a remote control (not necessarily toppy related)

One which is toppy related is [url=https://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=256135]How to open the remote for cleaning?[url].

I suggest to read it and also look at one or two generic videos so that you are confident about what you are trying to do and then go for it

(says someone who has never needed to do it!)

The cold running water method, perhaps with a bit of washing up liquid works well. The only thing to take care of is to leave the diassembled parts in a warm place to full dry out before re-assembly.

Put the disassembled remote in uncooked rice in the airing cupboard?
(It worked for my car key after it went through the washing machine - I was surprised that it's battery still worked!)

In my experience, it's better and safer to use either isopropyl alcohol or methylated spirits, use either to clean the circuit board tracks (cotton bud dipped in either is good) use the same method to clean the pads on the back of the button membrane, that usually does the trick with remotes.

Be careful with isopropyl alcohol on the black traces on the circuit-board as it can dissolve them.

I've found that the pads on the membrane can become non-conductive (measure with meter probes). My favourite solution is to touch them with a hot soldering iron (the membrane is silicone so won't melt).

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. I have cleaned one remote and all the buttons now work apart from the power button, so much improved. I don't have a soldering iron with me but may try that on my next visit.

I've just prised my 5810 remote apart. It feels as if there is a light coating of clear grease/oil.

The coating is on all the surfaces, ie back of front cover, both sides of the membrane and on the circuit board.

Is this a conductive grease or just years of handling?

I've also got some PPC 110 pro-POWER Contact Cleaner and wonder if that would help, though the data sheet doen't say what it contains, but the specs state:

Quote:
Leaves a residual oil film, which increases with the contact area and reduces resistance
Compatible with most plastics and rubber compounds

The grease seems to come out of the silicone membrane over time. The soldering iron method burns it off.
