Hi. I installed this TAP in my Autostart folder, which was probably a bad idea, and when I turn on my 5800 it starts. I get "Remove all pay TV channels?" with a Yes, No and Cancel button. I can use left and right to highlight each of these buttons, but I can't "press" them with anything.
Furthermore, the USB port doesn't seem to work any more; my Linux box issues no dmesg messages when I plug it in (and I know it's connected because I get a buzz from my speakers due to an earth loop).
I tried holding down 0 while powering up the unit, to prevent the TAP from running, but this didn't work either.
Any advice, please?
PS why is it made to look like a Microsoft Windows dialogue? |

Ah thank you - I read the instructions more carefully as I had been pressing the button before I switched the power on; should have realised when the remote light didn't come on.
Now the USB port works again and I've deleted the TAP from Auto Start. Could RemoteExtender have been preventing me pressing "OK"? |

I find it best to run this TAP when no other TAPs loaded.
i.e Press 0 on startup.
once it's does it's job, you need to shut down and restart the toppy. |

What is the current version of this TAP?
I only ask cos the TAPs section lists it as 1.7a, yet when I download it from the provided link, it turns out to be 1.6c!
BTW kudos to Firebird cos this is a lovely little TAP which works perfectly. I suggest that people create the text file from scratch in their own environment. That way, they know it has the correct format - all they have to do then is type the channel names correctly e.g. G.O.L.D. not G.O.L.D - Took me ages to spot that one

That takes so many of the advantages away though.
If one person has already carefully typed in the names, and verified they get deleted, it saves others so much time. |

It only just occurred to me to try deleting radio channels, to make more space for the EPG to be filed in better.
As Andy K said, it would be good to have something to work from, instead of having to start from scratch.
Pasting from a web page, into a text editor in your own environment, seems likely to work fairly well. If not, nothing lost, really.
Here's the one I just made. I've left the tips comments in as they were, mostly. My radio channels were numbered 700-732, after the last scan. I decided to just keep Radio 3 & 4, for now. Channel Remover reported 0/30 LCNs removed, but wanted to reboot. It did delete them successfully, so it seems showing 0 is a bug.
Copy and paste the contents below into ChannelRemoverRadio.txt, and save it in the sane folder as ChannelRemover.tap, on the Toppy:
// Radio channels to remove
lcn=700
lcn=701

…. this is a 10 year old thread, try ChannelOrganiser if you want the easy solution. |

I don't hold with the "necroposting" concept. One big pile is always better than lots of little piles, and this is the thread I found, for ChannelRemover. I still use it - on my TF5800, which is probably also 10 years old by now. I expect some other people do too.
I haven't encountered ChannelOrganiser before. I can't say I fully grasp what it's supposed to do, but it doesn't appear to do the same job. I don't really feel like putting in the effort to learn to use it either.
Thanks for the suggestion though. |

Sounds like you could have installed my PruneEPG tap and not bothered with removing the radio channels.
I suspect, but could be wrong, that you are not using the latest taps /patches on your system; suggest paste MyInfo Log.txt file to show your toppy config
ChannelOrganiser is designed to simplify scanning and removal of unwanted channels (e.g. Shopping, Social, Porn, Web, Radio). It also eliminates duplicate channels by only scanning a single transmitter (if you are currently receiving signals from two transmitters, you will have twice as much EPG info to process/store!)
Note: You can also scan/delete channels from a Windows pc using my TopManager/PcControl interface
Both CO and TM remember deleted channels making re-scanning "easy"

I've just remembered: Deleting channels does not reduce the amount of EPG information that is stored; it just removes the method of displaying it !
You really need my PruneEPG tap (obtain from my TopManager link below). This scans the EPG packets as they arrive and immediately discards them if they don't relate to a configured channel.
If you are not in the habit of shutting down the toppy overnight, you might also need EPG2MEI (this flushed out expired entries). It also tells MyStuff that new EPG information is stored on the disk (but I'm guessing you don't use MS)

I seriously doubt anyone still using a Toppy uses this TAP. It hasn't been updated for far longer than most TAPs, and it was replaced by ChannelOrganiser or Geoff's channel management functionality in the TopManager Windows program for good reasons. Neither of them are tricky to learn or use.
And do install PruneEPG as the Toppy certainly wasn't designed for the amount of EPG data it now receives. It fills the EPG buffer with useless information about unwanted channels in moments once you switch on the Toppy if you don't have it. This means you won't get many EPG updates for the channels you do need as the buffer is full of stuff you don't want. |

Noted. Thanks. I do generally leave it turned on, especially at this time of year, when it's less likely to get too hot. No, I don't use MyStuff.
I checked the list of my TAPs, under My Tools, not all of which I still use, and none have been updated in the last ten years or so. I find they mostly still work about as well as they ever did, though the increasing number of channels needing deletion has become more of a problem.
I notice the page for TopManager here: https://www.toppy.org.uk/downloads/info.php?tid=290 - doesn't mention deleting channels... unless I'm missing something. Maybe that page is out of date.
I use Altair, but on the whole I'd rather not run more on the PC, especially since Windows 7 is deprecated, and I have no intention of using Windows 10. I'm not against using other or more TAPs, within reason but so far, I haven't really felt the need. |

As I see it, it's an appliance. If it stops working properly, I look into it. If not, I leave it alone. I don't look for new and improved ways of using it, or make sure I have the latest anything. That's not my idea of a good time. |
