My Toppy is going round in circles system wise.

When I turn it on, it boots up, the screen comes up saying that it is verifying files and folders and then reboots and goes to the cycle again.

It has been doing this since 9 o'clock this morning - it now being 12.20, so I tried to get into it using my trusty laptop and the USB cable and no go on that either.

Perhaps some the panel can guide me as to what to do next?

My friend had one of these last week and I fixed it by extracting the disk and sticking it through my ToppDiskMedic (TDM) program.

Suggest you try the following
1) Switch toppy off and wait two minutes
2) Power on toppy and keep pressing 0 (this suppresses the taps starting) on the remote until the picture shows (actually, suggest you keep pressing it at intervals until the VF&F finishes). If you are lucky, the toppy will stay up at this point (my friend's didn't).

If the toppy stays up, that indicates that you have a bad tap or some sort of file corruption.

if it doesn't, that indicates a fault with the filing system. You can probably fix this by extracting the disk, connecting it to a windows pc (assuming correct disk interface available) and and running TopfHDRW/Doctor on it (the Doctor part). Note: you need to run TopfHDRW - windows won't recognise the file system.
Failing that, I could fix it but you would have to send me the disk (I can also recover the recordings if they have been "lost")

Anyway, work out whether or not you can get it to stay up without taps running.

I'm assuming that you have had ALL the capacitors in the power supply changed! If not, contact andyfras.

Geoff

Good afternoon Geoff and thank you

I am afraid the answer is that I cannot get it to stay up without taps running.

And still cannot connect by the USB interface

You are correct that I had ALL the capacitors in the power supply changed by andyfras some time ago.

As I now have been diagnosed with motor neurone disease and have arm onset I will need some help taking the hard drive out which I will have a my daughter comes home at the weekend - I think I have the right interface to fiddle with it on a PC

Try EmptySettings using Antares

The link alan_m posted talks about installing z4t.

As your signature mentions PcControl, you can ignore the bit about z4t as you already have this driver (assuming that you could previously use TopManager (TM) to connect to the toppy)
This means that you would only to download the EmptySettings.tfd file and the Antares package.

Read the link carefully, the copy of the .tfd file to the toppy will takse only a couple of seconds. Assuming it works, you will be locked into the system menu awaiting a scn for channels (which you can do with TM; just close Antares first)

Should you find this doesn't work, I suggest you power the toppy off until your daughter arrives (rather than leaving it continually rebooting)

Please let us know how you get on

Geoff

......OP's sig is very old, so z4t may be needed if windows updates have overwritten the driver.

Should you need to run z4t on a Win 10 laptop, please read how to install the driver on my GeeCeeBee website (it shows you how to get around the Win 10 security concerning unauthenticated drivers)

I have some legacy virtual machines including a Windows 7 one, which I have used to get to the hard drive and run HDDoctor

I deleted a couple of temporary recording files seem to got stuck together with some files marked "epg.bad" in theroot directory

Also, there is there is one capacitor on the power supply board which seems to have blown top - Could that be causing the problems?

More than a fair chance that it has something to do with it. I'd turn the Toppy off until you get the PSU sorted out

TFDoctor shows you still have recordings so turn it off until the psu is repaired.

Note andyfras recommends that all capacitors are changed (not just the ones that seem suspect). andy can supply kits (if you are up to doing it yourself) and/or a board swap and/or a "post it to me"service.

Hi Geoff,

Thank you again

The box we have is an ex andyfras one - and I am wondering if I really want to go down that route again (partly quite literally) - this may be the end of our association with the Toppy.

Please supply a photo of the suspect capacitor; I've never known one of my replacement capacitors to fail.

Sorry for the delay - as I mentioned above, I have developed some difficulties with my hands resulting from motor neurone disease, so I need some help to get the box apart take a photograph which I do not have at the moment.

When I do I will send you a photograph, probably later this week
