It depends on your usage. I would recommend 1TB maximum, although the Toppy can take up to 2TB, it slows down as it gets full due to the number of files.

I am currently using a 320GB SATA laptop drive, as I also have a Humax for HD recording.

The Toppy is far less critical about SATA disks than it is about PATA, but it is critical to use the right SATA adapter. This one works:

... you will also need an 80 wire IDE lead connected backwards.

I can supply both ready to go.

My preference is WD, but any reputable make should be OK.

Was it the toppy vibrating (rather than the disk) ?

If so, put something soft under it or use sticky felt pads

On some Toppies, even a slight vibration can cause the front panel buttons to rattle very loudly. Putting some packing (tiny bits of PVC tape) between the buttons and switches helps.

its been in the same place, not been touched switched on this morning a hum in the room. the same thing happened years ago. Would be best to just copy a drive or do a fresh install after saving recorded programs.

A reformat won't fix the hum.

Have you put your finger on the top of the toppy to see if the hum disappears?

Sounds as though you could get away with putting padding under it - or move slightly along the shelf.

Don't block the air vents underneath

Mine hummed badly from day one. I stood it on some of those 3-4mm thick felt pads they sell to stop furniture scratching the floor. That kept it quiet.

More recently I switched to a 2.5" SATA drive and it's now near silent. Trouble is I now can't tell if it's recording by ear, I have to go read the front panel. Rolling Eyes
