Hi

Just come back from Easter holidays to find my black Toppy 5800t powered up but hung showing the wrong time. A power-cycle got it back after VF&F but now it doesn't respond to the remote control, the light on the front panel doesn't flash.

I have checked the remote against my other silver Toppy and it's working fine so it's not the batteries or remote control itself.

The black Toppy seems to work normally, it powers on and off using the front panel button; MyStuff loads OK; it wakes up to record and I can access the system menus using the buttons behind the flap - it's just the remote control that's not working.

I assume this is a front panel failure, anyone seen this before??

Sig is probably right (plus the EPG prune TAP), but can't access the TAPs to find out!

Dave

I'm assuming the remote for the silver toppy also doesn't work on the black one.

Obvious question, have all the capacitors ever been replaced in the psu?
Most toppies have needed this a few years back but one occasionally sees ones that have made it without any modification.

Your best bet is andyfras to repair it and/or provide a kit to do it yourself.

If the silver toppy is only used occasionally, you could swap the disks while the black one is being repaired.

Correct, it doesn’t work either.

Not for a while, the unit was bought refurbished from Turbosat, I suppose a full new kit won’t do it any harm. I measured the voltages and they all seem “reasonable” to me.

According to Andy’s web site https://sites.google.com/site/andyfraserelectronics/freeview-and-satellite-recorder-repair/topfield-pvr-faults intermittent remote can by caused by the photo-diode, that said I have been noticing that the remote was getting a bit “blind”, having to press the button several times!

That’s probably what I’ll do!

Most toppy issues now seem to be related to capacitors so hopefully that will fix it, andy is best placed to advise on the photo diode.

Assuming you don't want to jump ship to something more modern, it is worth keeping an eye on the forum as someone may offer their box for free or the cost of postage (a good source of spares).

Should you be unlucky to suffer a disk wipe, I can recover the recordings if you don't want to lose them.

Geoff

When the IR receiver in the front panel fails, it usually also affects the front panel buttons, but you say they are working normally. So I'm not sure that the IR receiver is the cause of the problem.

However, the Toppy will certainly benefit from a set of new capacitors. Turbosat will only have replaced 2 or 3 capacitors when they did the refurb; one will be C22 which is the one that is used on the 5V reference for the PSU, so that is why the voltages still measure OK.

Turbosat, the UK Topfield distributors, will only have replaced the capacitors that had failed (if that was the reason the unit was returned to them). It is vanishingly unlikely that they will have replaced all of the 6 off 1000uF capacitors in the first PSU repair recommendation and it’s a certainty they wouldn't have replaced all the other capacitors now recommended.

Initially it was the 1000uF capacitors that failed in as little as 2 years but even if all of them were replaced it was found that other electrolytic capacitors in the power supply started to fail few years afterwards. Some of the 5800s must be getting on for being 15 years old.

and andyfras now recommends replacing all the caps (not just 6)

That is a possibility, it might be time to pension it off. I've been bemoaning the lack of HDMI output for a while....

I've swapped the disk into the silver one so I'm back "on the air".

I checked the photo-diode on the black one with the scope and it is working (at least there's a reasonable looking waveform coming out).

I've PM'ed Andy and I'll get some capacitor kits.

Sorry for the delay...

I changed the caps and the fault is still there - no response to the remote control, otherwise working OK.

You could try swapping front panels to see if the fault goes with the panel. If so, it's probably the IR receiver, or I can supply a working FP board.

One other thought is that there is an Ry patch for using the 5810 remote codes, to enable 2 Toppies to work together. Is it possible that this patch has inadvertently been applied?
