@Tabs

The disk is probably ok to use - the 6 "Pending Current Sectors" mean that the controller has detected 6 bad areas on the disk but has not yet remapped them onto spare "good" sectors. These will remain pending until the controller successfully reads the contents (the Pending count will reduce) ,or the contents are overwritten (Pending count reduces and/or Mapped Count increases) or decides they are rubbish.

Suggest you use the disk but monitor the count (you don't want it increasing significantly).

Having said that, disks sometimes show no errors but still cause problems.

Geoff

@Grand Dizzy

Your toppy problems appear to be disk related and the report indicates that it needs to be replaced. If you want any of the recordings on it, you need to copy these onto a new disk and/or the pc (the sooner the better)

Suggest you also use the TopManager| Snapshot| Take mechanism to preserve the MyStuff data files

Geoff

Thanks so much for your help, Geoff! Smile

As you suggested, I'm going to "evacuate" all the recordings from the hard drive, and use Topmanager to take a Snapshot.

Once I get a new drive in there, what do you think would be the best procedure to go about installing everything, and re-integrating the MyStuff data files?

Oh, also, buying a new drive, are there any particular specs I'll need? I already have a SATA converter in there, so it will be SATA.

@Grand Dizzy

I suggest you copy your files to the pc using TopfHDRW. If you have enough room on the pc, I think you can just copy the DataFiles folder and it will copy the folder, the recordings and any sub folders (if you don't have enough room, you will have to copy subsets of the files)
TopfHDRW doesn't work well on files in ProgramFiles so you need to use TM "Snapshot| Take" for that.
When you get the new disk (ask andyfras for advice), format it in the toppy then connect it to the pc and use TopfHDRW to copy the DataFiles folder (or recordings) back to the disk.
Put the disk back in the toppy and use TM Snapshot to restore the ProgramFile contents.
If you need any further info, please post in your original thread

Geoff

@Poppa

The disk is quite empty now.
I'm not quite sure what the "other:2" means in DataFiles (although it may relate to deleted files in MyStuff which are in it's waste basket).

The disk is at the end of it's design life (3% remaining) - it is only designed to spin for about 73500 hours and it is now reaching that point.
The low start/stop count means that the toppy (or computer) using it has been running almost continually - you should be using the menu option in MyStuff to automatically shut the toppy down overnight.
There are 1463 sect
ors waiting to be remapped - this shows that the drive is struggling to read these sectors. As the disk is now relatively empty, I would expect these sectors to be mapped to good sectors when they are next written.

You should consider changing the disk. However, as you don't have a large number of recordings to lose, you might prefer to just use it knowing that at some point you will need to replace it. If you are planning to start storing recordings long term then you should replace it (otherwise they will be lost when the disk dies)

Geoff

Thanks for the translated information Geoff, I've just ordered a Samsung HD105SI, reputedly brand new, from eBay. This drive is one of those listed in the 'Working' SATA list. Now I have to find a compatible IDE - SATA converter, fortunately these too are listed, then I'll just have to find out how to install 'em.

Ask andyfras about the adapter - he will know those that work in a toppy (not all do) and probably be the cheapest.

@MacC

The disk looks physically sound but there has been a minor corruption of the file system (you have files in the root folder that shouldn't be there). However these files may have been there a long time and may be unrelated to your current problems.

Suggest you use option 1 of my GCBMyStuffInstaller (follow TopManager link in my forum sig) to ensure all your files and patches are up to date. This won't delete the files in the wrong location but they aren't causing any trouble. Then post the MyInfo log in your original thread.

An interpretation of the SMART data:
------------------------------------
        Acronis Health Indicator = 96 %
  The non-zero Raw Read Error Rate can be ignored (assuming no other failure
  indications).
  While the disk temperature is now 51°C, it has been as high as 65°C.
  The Current Pending Sector, a critical attribute, shows that 4 sectors are waiting
  to be remapped.
  The non-zero Write Error Rate can be ignored (assuming no other failure
  indications).

@stevemj

The disk appears to be fine apart from 4 sectors waiting to be remapped. The disk hardware will automatically map these suspect sectors to spare replacement ones should the need arise. Hopefully these suspect sectors are in an unused area of the disk(as it is effectively empty).

Just run fsCheck again in a few weeks and check that the number hasn't increased (it should reduce if the sectors are remapped)

Geoff
