@NeilM

That report indicates that the disk is fine although there has been some minor corruption at some point (as shown by a Settings folder and "MyChannel Info Data.txt" being found in the top level folder); you can delete these using Antares or Altair (or possibly by using TopManager Tools| Analyze ProgramFiles...). Alternatively, just leave them there!

Although the "UDMA CRC Error Count=1729" looks much bigger than the 1504 shown in the dropbox image you posted, this can be ignored because this is a "Rate" (as shown by the r in _prcos) rather than a fixed discrete count. There is no standard for how the numbers change i.e. the manufacturers can set/interpret the numbers as they want.

Geoff

Hi again,

My toppy has gradually become less reliable in the last couple of weeks. I ran the fscheck over last weekend and the disk health was at 60%, Reran the fscheck tonight and have the following - all the recordings look to be empty

Code:

File System Analysis

Looks like the disk is dying (414 uncorrectable sectors) and this has resulted in corruption of the file system (or possibly the file structure on the disk may still be valid but the controller is having trouble reading the disk).

Suggest you source another disk.
Make sure that you choose one that is compatible with a toppy (it is picky) - see Replacing your Hard Drive.

But just in case, have you replaced the capacitors in the toppy PSU? If not then this may the cause of the problem (fixing the psu may make the disk usable). Also, there is no point changing the disk if the psu is failing.
Suggest you contact andyfras re his repair service - he may also have suitable replacement drives. Should you go for a modern disk, he can also help with a "cheap" interface card and a suitable cable.

If the recordings on the disk are important to you, I can attempt to recover the disk using my own program (ToppyDiskMedic) but this is not likely to be successful if the disk is really failing rather than due to the PSU.

Switch the toppy off until you have had the psu checked (or confirm it has been done).

I'm trying to keep this thread for fsCheck reports so, if you want to post further, please start a new thread.

Cheers
Geoff

@cawright1

The SMART characteristics show that the disk is working alright (100% health) so the problem seems to be the file corruption.

Suggest you use Antares to delete all the recordings mentioned - that will get rid of all the current "bad" files (don't delete the .ts file)

I did notice that the tap failed to get the disk geometry ("Failed calling HDD_GetHDDInfo") and that this call succeeded in the first report. I don't know whether this was caused by a temporary glitch (and/or timing problem) or was caused by whatever is preventing the file headers being written correctly.

Geoff

ok, well as I' have deleted the recordings that option seems to have gone anyway.

Just a thought, I have taken out the small looping RF cable from the toppy. Would that have any such effect on recordings?

But you don't know which tuner it is going to use!

Can you please post any further comments in your original thread? - I'm trying to keep this to fsCheck reports.

@goodolpete

The disk looks fine.

You might like to upgrade to fsCheck 1.5 (TopManager | Tools| Install Files| fsCheck). Hopefully, this would make the temperatures more reasonable!

Geoff

@SunnysideUK

The disk doesn't look great but is obviously still working (and may continue to do so for some time). You could just run fsCheck regularly and see if the number of errors increase (indicating imminent failure). The disk still has available "spare" sectors.

File systems can get trashed if the disk becomes full (you only have 6GB) left. Suggest you delete some files to prevent the disk being filled (Note: this may mean that some of the reported errors will change as areas in "dormant" files become available for writing)

Alternatively you may prefer to install a newer larger disk. The toppy is fussy about which disks will work (see Juwlz's Replacing your Hard Drive". One caution concerning WD Green disks, is that there are reports, on pc forums, of these drives not having a long life because they continually spin down/up. Basically, when there is no activity, the drive spins down until it is required. On pc's, some programs poke the disk every few minutes causing it to spin up again. As the disks are only rated for a certain number of spin down/up cycles, the disk starts to fail as this limit is reached. Note: This caution applies to pc systems and may not be applicable to toppy use (several members have successfully installed these and haven't reported any problems - but then they won't be using the latest WD models).

You will need to use TopfHDRW if you want to transfer files from the old disk to the new one. Might be an idea to ask andyfras for advice on what drive to go for (he might transfer the files for you if he does the upgrade).

Cheers
Geoff
