I know that this has been covered before, but I seem to be missing something obvious.

I did a rescan prior to the Olympics to get the extra Red Button channel, but it also changed the EPG for other channels such as ITV Be and Dave Ja Vu. I've just noticed today that I'll need to update BBC4 which is on 24 hours at the moment. I've checked (and edited where necessary) Freeview.Dat and EPG2MEI.Dat, but I still have the gaps. What have I forgotten?

Possibly my PruneEPG tap (early installations of MyStuff 6.6 won't have this)

Check in EPG2MEI.ini - you may have restrictions on some channels.

If possible, rescan using TopManager/PcControl (requires windows); this will ensure that everything corresponds to that in Freeview.dat

I did the scan using TM, so was surprised with the gaps, though I didn't update Freeview.Dat when it suggested. Should I have done that? I thought it was out of date.

I was going to have a full sort through tonight, but SWMBO has announced we're off on a surprise holiday early tomorrow morning. Good news, but it means I'll have to leave it as is till I get back, as I need to pack. Apologies if I don't reply for a bit Very Happy

Tagging on to this thread;

I normally rescan using Channel Organiser, allowing it to update whatever it wants.

However, some of the more obscure channels now have "poor" (or missing) EPG.

(some of the 5's and ItvBe, from memory).

I gather (from searching the forum) that I need to get a "good" freeview.dat, and repeat the scan.

Questions:
1) Is my plan (in red above) correct?
2) Where do I get a good freeview.dat?

Freeview.dat is used to classify channels in channel organizer, but can be user over-ridden and to set time restrictions in epg2mei.ini and extend.ini, I update mine via TopManager when prompted, but it is always out of date if you rescan soon after a change, so I tend to update the files manually.

Does the native epg have info for the problem channels, or have you just found the multiple LCN hogging +1 channels that only broadcast a couple of hours overnight?

Native EPG is fine. Being a Linux user, don't have access (AFAIK) to TopManager.

I believe I just need to get a "current" freeview.dat and run ChannelOrganiser;
I'm trying to get confirmation of this, and source of the freeview.dat.

There isn't an "uptodate" Freeview.dat - it is always incorrect after a channel change (and there seems to be a change every other week or so).

You might get offered a file that someone has modified for themselves but only if you are very lucky. I suspect that, like myself, most people just don't bother changing it because the file is still "ok" for the channels that they use ("ok" being relative).

ChannelOrganiser (CO) generates a file (stored in \ProgramFiles\Logs ?) telling you about "errors" it has detected in Freeview.dat and you can use this to adjust your own version. To minimize the effort, only concentrate on the channels that you intend to use. You just need to edit the file to contain appropriate data. Please be aware that the fields are separated by a tab character .If your editor supports it, convert all tabs to |, make the changes and then convert all |s back to tabs (prevents spaces looking like delimiters).

Unless you know different, set all StartTimes and EndTimes to 0000 - this disables restrictions written to the EPG2MEI.ini file (you could always look in this file to see if you currently have any restrictions or excludes on the channels you are interested in).

If anyone has a fairly up-to-date file then they can send it to me to validate/ ask EMJB to host it (I don't intend updating the current version as it would be too much work).

An old post.....

ccs wrote:
The tap epg2mei has a .ini file which includes a list of channels to restrict/ignore.

You can edit this file, using TopManager, a pc based utility.

Personally, I "allow everything all the time", using the following....

Code:
# File updated by  Channel Organiser B2.1 on 28/3/2015 at 10:37

[Control]
Output=EPG  # Note: this is temporary and the output will eventually be EPG.mei
EuroDST
External=MyStuff
Demangle
MergeExt
UseExtGenre
#AddExtendedInfo
StripDups
Debug=Off
DescSeparator=
DescTerminator=

It means subtle changes to channel numbers doesn't do any harm, after running ChannelOrganiser.

NB I don't allow CO to update config files, otherwise the above .ini file would be overwritten. Just exit when CO says it's going to update these files.
Extend.ini can be a problem as well, I've always used this...
Code:
# File updated by Channel Organiser B2.1 on 28/3/2015 at 10:37

[Control]
PrePad = 2
PostPad = 6

Please note that if you want to delete any restrict or exclude lines in EPG2MEI then you really ought to adjust the corresponding starttime and endtime in ChannelOrganiser. when run, CO will rewrite the file (if you tell it to).
Directly deleting them could lead to them being reinstated by CO when you perform a future scan and update.

Also check that you are using CO B2.1 (?) - the "2." is the important part
It would also be a good idea to indicate the names and channel numbers of the channels you are having problems with.

ISTR that some channels display entries for the EPG even when they are off-air. Is there a list of what channels are transmitting when?

Such a list (if it exists) would be complicated by 'on air' but showing shopping as opposed to programme content.
