I'd advise updating to the latest version of MyStuff, which won't tell you that, and has improved backup and recovery options. (And a couple of new features, like the ability to ignore "New: " at the start of programme titles in Searches.)

Still have one going strong on second tv set. Smile
Main one replaced for an Xtrend ET8500 when we finally upgraded to a HD tv set.

Pop into the forum every now and again as still very useful for DTV news.

After a capacitor repair and hard disk rebuild mines still going strong and the main box used in the house, records everything we ask and as long as we keep up watching as much as we can there's usually around 25-30% free on the drive.
Like others i'm unsure of where to go for my next box when this finally gives up the ghost as i don't like Tivo's won't pay sky although have an Alien2 box anyway, so am possibly looking at YouView ... We'll see...
None will ever be as good as Mystuff for looks and functionality though.

Both my 5810's have been relegated to 1st and 2nd reserve to an Xtrend ET10k running VIX for the last year or so.
I can't fault it - it does everything (I need) that MyStuff does.

Not the easiest of box's to get to grips with (that's half the fun, though), but I would certainly recommend the enigma2 route to anyone worried about a replacement.

During the Olympics, for example, I was able to record as many channels as I needed to allow for the bbc's insistence on switching channels all the time. So maybe 8 recordings running concurrently with no issues.

Still using Toppy's here, we have a 5800 facelift in the lounge & my son has a pre-facelift 5800 in his room.

However, as of last week I took a punt on a 2nd Gen BT YouView box DTRT2100 (Humax) from eBay, & I have to say I quite like it, is it better than a Toppy, yes, is it better than a MyStuff etc enabled Toppy, no, most definitely no.

I miss the folders, quickjump, search facilty etc that are missing on the YouView box, but I like the HD channels which look much sharper than the barely used Freesat box I had, & the native on-demand catch up services, I also like the fact it works out of the box, my days of endless tinkering with channel logo's etc are behind me now, my non-techy wife likes the YouView box too.

I think our Toppy's will stay around for quite a bit longer yet, I've had a Toppy since they first came out in 2005, for a consumer piece of electronics that's a long time.

It'll be a sad day when one or both Toppy's die but I wont spend an age trying to resurrect them.

A big thanks to BobD, Jules, ChunkyWizard, R2-D2, Nigel Whitfield (for this site) & the others I've forgotten to mention for making the Toppy brilliant & to last this long, I fear without their contributions that a lot of Toppy's would have graced WEEE recycling bins a long time ago.

Tony

I'm still just about using mine, but at the next sign of trouble, I think I'll give up.

I got my first one in 2006, and it was quite reliable for a while. I then found this board and the main toppy site added mystuff etc.

I'm a little unlucky in that I live in an apartment block with a communal TV ariel which doesn't have the best reception and goes wrong every few months. This has resulted in a few trashed disks over the years. I do however have relatively decent ADSL broadband, good enough for HD streaming.

I wrote a batch file which runs daily on my old xp laptop which copies all of my important programs from the toppy for a back up for those times that the disk has been lost.

But how times have changed since 2006. I now use get_iplayer to download BBC TV (HD) & radio and Toppy is mostly used for comedies from various parts of channel 4 (more 4 etc). I also have a NowTV box which gives me access to catch up, I've now worked out how to play the adverts before watching the show on All4. So something like "National Treasure" which previously I would have recorded on the toppy and then watched once all of the episodes had been recorded, I can now watch in better definition on my NowTV.

I found that in practice never got round to watching all the films I recorded - I still have over a 100 on a usb hard disk. Now I don't even bother setting timiers for them. I do use netflix however....

My current 5810 is getting the worse for wear, it recently went to Andy Fraser to replace a blown chip and came back after being roughly handled in the van... it will require a few tweaks to get going smoothly again. So I've been without for about a fortnight, and it hasn't been that traumatic.

So after I've spent a bit of time fixing it I'll use it until it breaks again (e.g. due to a corrupted signal trashing the disk, or another chip blowing), and then put it to rest.

If I lived somewhere with a good TV signal and slow broadband I might have a different view, but for me delivery of TV via the internet has mostly replaced broadcast.

I have three still in use with a couple of spares. There is nothing to compare to a Toppy running MyStuff.

I have a number of NowTV boxes running Plex for streaming from my server and catchup.

My 5800 is still in use 5 days a week, recording one program which we watch later at night plus anything else that the lounge set up cant.

I have had no problems for years and long may it last!

Ages ago I posted about slight pixilation that occurs shortly after playback is started, it still happens and has never got any worse. Voltages were checked at the time and found to be all o.k.

As others have said, a fine machine, and thanks to all those that worked so hard to make it better.

Hope this is not pushing my luck by writing this!!

Mine is in use daily and has been solid as a rock for years. Godsend with the kids and their programs.. however, it has over the last month started playing up. I'm fairly certain it is the HDD and am going to try a replacement.

Only annoying thing is that it will lose my recordings, I am aware I can copy them over but that means purchasing more bits and time which I don't have.

I'm also in the process of sticking a Pi 3 in with Kodi so we'll have to see what happens.

If all (13) capacitors have never been changed, then the psu is probably the cause of your disc problems.
A new hd could easily be damaged as well.

Send a PM to Geoff Bacon as he can probably recover them for you.
