Due to selfish reasons (I use Linux, and only recently got the 'net at home) I wrote a hacked Perl installer, downloaded all the files at the office, took them home on a thumb drive, and installed them via ftpd-topfield.
I now have the 'net at home, albeit on a Linux (LXDE) box.
The Big Question: will the installer run under WINE?
Given its need to use both USB and the internet, it seems unlikely, but worth asking.

I understand that some members have used WINE to run TopManager i.e. this shows the installer should be able to access the toppy via the USB.
I don't know what functions they have used in TM but, no one has said that they haven't been able to use the Tools| Install Files menu (which downloads files from the internet).
I also have a standalone MyStuff installer on my TM web site - this fetches all the files from the internet and creates a zip file. This allows the MS installer to be run without an internet connection.
Why don't you just give the installer a try and see if it works.

Been many updates since I last tried - but yes TopManager did run under a Ubuntu release for me - but connection to Toppy was via a slug, and there was some specific configuration needed for the ftp connection. There was also a need at one time to install some parts of Internet Explorer - I do not recall if that was worked around.
I now find it easiest to use a windows laptop in same room as Toppy, with connection by wifi to router to nslu2 to Toppy. I still use Linux a lot - but usually in a VM on the laptop now. |

Because I don't want to try and manually sort out a half-done installation, if it fails.
I have checked my noddy perl (around 400 lines) against the latest installer script, and there are no new commands being used, so my proven-on-the-last-two releases approach must needs serve again.

If it is going to fail, it is when it tries to connect to the toppy - not half way through the installation (if you use my offline installer).
Still, if you have a working method then just stick to it.
Geoff
BTW Your signature ("TAPs: EPG2MEI v0.96; MyStuff 6.4; MyInfo B5.6") is extremely sparse in the taps it mentions. If it is correct then you don't have a full installation of MS. Also make sure that my PruneEPG tap is installed |

I use Linux to connect to the Toppy through ftpd-topfield and FileZilla. This is mainly for downloading files, but also updating files etc
I have used TopManager through WINE and the FTP connection option worked (as per FileZilla). If I remember correctly, what didn't work was the automatic downloading and unzipping of files.
Last time I installed MyStuff I used the step by step guide for offline use, but may look at Geoff's zip file if I had to do it again. |

My perl script downloads (from the 'web) to a download area, and if the file has already been downloaded, it doesn't do it again.
This means that (if you want to) you can do all the downloads before connecting to the Toppy.
(it's also configurable for FTP destination, so I test out new installs against a running copy of http://www.proftpd.org/ before trying the Toppy)
Would there be any interest in my Perl installer, amongst the Linux-ers here?
It's a simple(ish) 400 line script.

There would from me!
This assumes I'd need to reload MyStuff at some point or if there is likely to be another version.
Thanks |
