asteroider:
You have totally missed the point. Nobody here is suggesting that every power supply in every piece of electronic equipment is likely to be faulty. However it is very well known, at least here in the UK, that the original power supply units supplied with Topfield boxes were built with sub-standard capacitors and they invariably fail after about 5 years of use. It is not some weird cult or anything else that your uninformed rant was suggesting, it is a well known fact. Maybe those in Australia were better, but it seems unlikely.
If, instead of abusing those who were (and i suspect the past tense is probably valid) trying to assist you, you had spent a while looking through the forum, you would have found that there have been numerous instances here of Topfield boxes acting erratically for which the solution turned out to be PSU capacitor improvements.
If you have been lucky and solved your problem by using your very suspect methods, then good for you. However if, in a few weeks or months, you find your hard disk has died, please don't come complaining here. |

Given the only 'advice' being given over and over was 'firmware reset' and 'power cap replacement', despite the symptoms I described and my arguments (unchallenged with specifics) for the above being addressed or irrelevant...., I am not sure it matters. |

Why did you come on the forum and ask for advice and then totally ignore it and argue with those who gave it?
I guess you think your skills are way, way above ours and "we know nothing".
People here freely gave advice based on years of practical knowledge. Your loss. |

I suggest that you leave this forum as you obviously have no interest in receiving seriously offered advice (and with your appalling attitude are unlikely to be offered any more) and find yourself a Toppy forum within Australia, if such exists, where you may find members who have seen similar symptoms to yours and have answers more to your liking. Edit: I see you already have.
As previously stated, erratic operation such as you described in post #1, including hard disk failures, are invariably found to be due to PSU problems in Topfield boxes here in the UK, but if you cannot accept that concept, then that is up to you. |

... I'd leave him to sort himself out - in his last post he was even complaining about advice that was never given. |

You lot absolutely refuse to read the thread properly prior to dishing out the same old advice over and over.
I said early on I had addressed firmware upgrades downgrades with abundant caution and I had also said that the voltages were stable and within spec, yet you all get upset when I dont follow the advice despite the arguments presented that these were not the issues.
Still running well so I consider this issue resolved without touching the power caps and not FW related.
PS - As an afterthought I tested and replaced the polyprop safety caps which were below spec but I have not replaced the electrolytic can power caps.... go figure!
So if anyone else has this issue in future, yes FW and aluminium electrolytic power cap may be the cause, but if you have stable voltages close to spec and have addressed firmware as I have maybe best to look elsewhere as I did. |

I think it is best if we all let this thread rest
Merry Xmas to all

so those were replaced with new ones (ebay specials)
Hmmm.
"Special" as in cheapest Chinese factory floor sweepings, or "Special" as in "High quality branded low ESR" ?
If the former, "may you live in interesting times" applies. |
