Better late than never {I suppose Rolling Eyes }

Finally found some time to sit down and perform some housekeeping on the Toppy (install ChannelManager, PruneEPG & fsCheck - many thanks to all of the developers)

Here is the output of my fsCheck:

@widget

The "pending sector" statistic indicates that there are 3 areas on the disk that are suspect. These will remain as pending until the toppy tries to reuse this space; at this point they should be transparently mapped to good sectors This is normal behaviour for a disk so the disk is fine (especially as there are no other indicated problems)

I woke up this morning to find Toppy still on and the display not scrolling. A reboot caused a VF&F and looking at the file list it had stopped during recoding "The True Story" (Star Trek 25/10/2015 Sun 00:50 to 01:40 Ch5) and missed the subsequent 4 timers. The File was showing as zero length and about 45 seconds long with a message 'invalid file'. Not sure if the change to GMt was relevant so I ran signal monitor which gave 100% quality on all muxes, then fscheck, result below.

I have had issues with Channel Organiser in the past, so the misplaced file (zero length dated 25/8/15) comes as no surprise. (The high temp of 66deg dates back to a very hot day in 2013)

@Bizman

As you have probably already guessed, the disk looks fine.

The ChannelOrganiser History.txt in the root indicates that there was either a minor corruption or that you triggered some obscure set of actions in CO that caused it to write to the root instead of \ProgramFiles\Settings (the tap has to set/remember which directory it is using and may not, say, have correctly restored it after a call to a subroutine)

Suggest you just delete this file.

Suggest you also power the toppy off for two minutes to give it a cold reset (although you have probably done this already).

Geoff

Thanks for your comments, Geoff, all seems back to normal now. I can only assume that there was a power glitch (not uncommon here). Unfortunately my UPS is currently out of action until I get it repaired or replaced.

The disk is physically ok but it looks as though there is some minor corruption of the file system
viz
/msdat.lnk
/MyStuff_Startup.flg
>>> Warning: Not normally present in __ROOT__

/DataFiles/Myra Hindley The Untold Story.rec
No transport packets indicates that the file shouldn't play.

/ProgramFiles/Logs/?Ȱ
The file name indicates that this is definitely corruption of a file entry.

Of course, these may have occurred some time ago and are only noticeable now because you have run fsCheck.

Suggest you get the reset of the capacitors changed and then delete the above files (either use Antares or, delete them from the TopManager Tools| Analyze ProgramFiles option (I don't think TM will let you see the files in the root directory using the normal Connection| Browe option.)

(Note: If you find you can't delete the file in Programs\Logs; try renaming it to a.log and then delete it)

*** END OF REPORT ***

Worth noting that before my winter clean the Toppy had be running continuously for 39 days with no problems whatsoever.
I've run it this way (continuously) since I bought it way back in 2006 other than a PSU failure (new caps sorted that) and OE (operator error) I've never had any problems with it. When I did the caps I upgraded the HDD and fitted a cooling fan. The cooling fan was well worth it IMHO, the Toppy is always cool to touch now.

@jimi

Thanks for the report although the one before "some housekeeping" would have been more informative!

As you have no doubt guessed, the disk and file system are looking fine. Posting the data also means that you now have something to compare a future analysis with.

Keeping the toppy up for 39 days is quite impressive but goes against the general advice (gleaned from posts) on the forum of doing an overnight shutdown. As well as reducing temperature on the toppy (your fan is doing that), it also improves free memory/reduces memory fragmentation and prevents memory exhaustion due to memory leakages, Should you wish to shutdown overnight, just enable the appropriate MyStuff options around 0030 (say). Personally, I also run an EPG timer at 0700 with an elapsed time of 15 minutes although this is probably not required.

I've looked at this and discussed it before on another thread and while not disputing the collective wisdom about nightly shutdowns I've never found the need. This was what I posted on another thread

jimi wrote:

Your probably correct, but as I work shifts and we record programs at during the night as well as daytime, I'd struggle to find consistent times to power them down, not really worth the effort IMHO
Given the temps that both my Toppies run at now, heat isn't a concern to me now.

but it will also clear out any potential creeping memory leaks (and therefore minimise the risk of memory corruptions and resulting crashes / loss of recordings and/or settings, etc.), and give any TAPs that you run a chance at a clean start at least once per day.

I've never had any problems with this kind of thing other than ones caused by external factors (broadcasters, power cuts etc) and OE (operator error) Embarassed
There's another school of thought regarding electronic equipment that postulates that the most stressful times are at power up/down and minimising these periods extends the life of the equipment.
I work with (and maintain) a lot of electronic equipment that runs 24/7 and our experience seems to support this theory.
Obviously everyone's situation / experience is different and for others your advice is well worth considering.
Cheers
Jimi

As you say my cooling fan (thread here http://forum.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=230124&highlight=#230124) keeps it cool (pretty much always 30C) and I have never had any problems attributable to memory fragmentation / leakage / exhaustion. I've run it like this for more or less 10 years pretty much trouble free and am quite happy to continue the same way. As I said it works for me, but doesn't mean it would work for others.

Thanks for the previous report.

BTW, the toppy will automatically turn back on to record a program i.e. you don't need to worry about keeping it on just because a recording may or may not fire.
Still, if it works for you then keep doig it; I suspect it wouldn't have worked well in the "early days" because the taps and firmware were not so stable.

Geoff

One way to lessen the load is to turn off the timeshift buffer, or just tune it to a non-transmitting channel. The HD will spin down after a few minutes, and it uses barely more power than in standby.

I turn it off nightly, and use MS to start it around 7am on a blank channel, currently ITV4+1, though I have to change the channel occasionally depending on what's being transmitted when...
