Hi,
I wish to swap two hard drives with each other from their respective toppys (5800's). I'm running MyStuff on both.

Q; Will this affect the data stored on either machine? Not any recorded programs, (because they will move with the disc) but the data which such as the timers and detail of which programs are duplicates on series recording etc.

If so will be after some pointers in the right direction if I need to swap some data files?

Thanks
Kev.

I'd swap the drives, boot tapless, check that the drive looks ok using the native interface,
run the latest version of ChannelOrganiser to re-tune and get rid of unwanted channels. This will recreate your timers.
I'd delete them, again using the native interface, and then reboot. Wait for 30 minutes for MyStuff to get sorted.

And then update to the latest version of MyStuff.

I think he wants to swap the mystuff entries as well otherwise he could have just swapped the two toppies (assuming they are in the same location).

If this is the case, connect a toppy to the pc
1) boot toppy tapless i.e. so MyStuff isn't running
2) copy \ProgramFiles\Settings\MyStuff folder to the pc (copying the folder should copy the contents including the subdirectories) - use TopManager or Antares to copy
3) Rename \ProgramFiles\Settings\MyStuff to \ProgramFiles\Settings\OldMyStuff
4) Shutdown toppy
5) Repeat steps 1 to 3 on the second toppy (but save the MyStuff Folder into a different area on the pc)
6) on second toppy, copy back the \ProgramFiles\Settings\MyStuff files saved from the first toppy
7) reboot toppy normally (assuming not needing a scan etc) and check it out
8 ) on first toppy, copy back the \ProgramFiles\Settings\MyStuff files saved from the second toppy

Should you decide that you want to revert a toppy back to its original MS,
a) boot tapless
b) rename \ProgramFiles\Settings\MyStuff to \ProgramFiles\Settings\otherMyStuff
c) rename \ProgramFiles\Settings\OldMyStuff to \ProgramFiles\Settings\MyStuff
d) reboot toppy.

Geoff

Thanks Geoff,

That sounds more like I'd expect. I have a toppy i will be selling soon but I want to put its bigger drive in one of the ones I'm keeping. I'll give it a whirl.

ccs does have a good point, I'm still running MS 6.4, best get that sorted too!

Fair enough - I'm still confused, but that's nothing new.

If it helps,
I want to swap only the HDD, a 250g HDD drive for a 500 and vice versa, not the toppy its self. I'd like to keep everything exactly the same, the timers, recording data history etc (i don't know the exact terms, - mystuff data?) on each toppy.
Obviously the actual recordings will move with the drive but I want the history and timers for future to remain in the same machine...

Not knowing where this data is held is the reason for asking.and if ts possible.

The data about the recordings, all the searches etc., as well as the recordings themselves, are all on the drive too. The effect will be the same as physically swapping the whole machine.

The only thing that isn't is the firmware, but if they're both 5800s and both running MyStuff, then presumably you used the installer, so they both have the same firmware too.

I've written a guide to replacing your hard drive, but if you just copy the whole /Program Files directory, or even the whole MyStuff directory, you'll lose MyStuff's association between what's been recorded (on that machine), and recordings that actually on it.

What do you REALLY want to achieve?

Julie

increase the drive by 250gb in my main front room toppy from the office one without changing the actual machine

thanks for clearing that up, its probably easier to just swap the drives and deal with any timer historys etc as and when the come up!

Do you want to keep the recordings that are currently on the larger drive? If not, format it (in the Toppy - a 10 second job), and treat it as a new drive for the other machine as per my guide in my last post. Job done.

If you want to keep the recordings that are currently on the larger drive (and the ones that are on small one), but the searches that are on your smaller one, I can think of a way to do that too.

But as I said, it depends on exactly what you want to achieve, which is why I asked.

Julie

As you are on MS 6.4, there will be hundreds of old MyStuff backup files on each disk (roughly 1 for each time the toppy has booted since you installed 6,4).
It takes a very long time, possibly hours, to delete these files during upgrade to 6.5.

To minimise issues, I suggest you install TopManager and use its Tools| Manage MyStuff Backup files option. This will show you how many files there are and, while still relatively slow at deleting (1 or 2 per second) is much much faster than using the MyStuff installer.

I suggest you do this before swapping the MyStuff areas on each machine (as per my last post). This will make the copies to/form the pc and the subsequent cleanups much easier/quicker. It is also something you are going to have to do anyway if you want to upgrade to 6.5

The larger drive only has a few recordings on, which I can soon move/delete easy. Then it can be formatted and used as a new drive for the other toppy.

I need to have a serious clear out of the smaller drive but with it in the other toppy it will be right next to the PC or I can put it in a external USB enclosure.

Looking through I won't mind hugely about loosing the search data.

This is something I've since read after starting this topic, for the toppy with the larger drive MS 6.5 took a few seconds to install, the smaller drive one will need some time allocated after a few years of 6.4, my next thing to do by the sounds of it.

There is no panic to do my swap, I appreciate your and julie's help so far.
Thanks for the timesaver tips!
