Code: File System Analysis

VERDICT: The file system appears GOOD
Number of folders = 24
Number of files = 589
Capacity = 466 GB (16 GB free)
ISSUES
------
Number of corrupted file entries = 1
Number of files in wrong branch = 1 (Fix may require TopfHDRW)
/DataFiles/The Bo 2/6.rec
>>> The name contains invalid characters
This may be an indication of corruption.
Note: It is unlikely that this file can be deleted directly from a remote
computer.
To Fix: Try using a pc program, or the remote control, to rename the file to
something that is valid.
If successful, the file can then be accessed and/or deleted.
/MP3/Greatest Hits, Vol. 2/desktop.ini
>>> Expected this file to be in /ProgramFiles...
If not intentional, this may be due to a user transfer into the wrong target
folder or by a corrupted file system.
To Fix (when due to transfer): Delete or move into /ProgramFiles
To Fix (corruption): Attach disk to PC and repair with TopfHDRW.

And this is for the older 5810 running native, and yes I do know that the HDD has hit 65C, but it all looks OK (I think).

@chris_s
/DataFiles/The Bo 2/6.rec
>>> The name contains invalid characters
Looks like it is complaining because the name includes a / (... Bo 2/6 ...)
The next version of fsCheck will spell out the individual characters so that one can see binary non-printing characters.
You can probably rename this with Altair (but then the MyStuff entry might not be correct so might be easier to ignore it).
/MP3/Greatest Hits, Vol. 2/desktop.ini
>>> Expected this file to be in /ProgramFiles... Looks like I need to relax the rule that .ini files are only present in \ProgramFiles.
The interpretation should have mentioned that the temperature had reached 65C at some point - I'll have to check the code to see why it didn't say anything [edit](my Delphi test code noticed the temperature so I must have made a mistake converting it to C).[/edit]
Many thanks for the report.
Geoff
[edit]Chris has since clarified that
1) the / was added to the file name when he renamed it.
2) the .ini file was a consequence of him copying entire folders from his pc into the \MP3 folders (he has now deleted them).

Hi
I'd had a few playback problems since putting in a new larger drive (after getting Andy to replace the caps) and ran this TAP the other day to see what was going on. It found loads of corrupt files and gave me helpful suggestions to fix them. So thank you for that and here is the fsCheck log (after carrying out the suggestions). Anything I should be concerned with?
Thanks
Luke

Hi Luke
Quote: /DataFiles/__temprec__.ts

>>> Recording in progress You can ignore these (they are comments rather than issues)
Quote: /DataFiles/Boys Stuff/Ice Age_101226.rec

>>> Failed recording (Transport Stream packets not detected) This indicates that the tap didn't find any usable information at the start of the recording (it doesn't check the whole file as that could take some time).
Please try to play these. If they don't play then delete them; if one or both plays then please send me a pm so that I can analyze them further.
Just noticed that "The Emperors New Groove_101003.rec" was recorded today i.e you should do a rescan to ensure you have a good channel line up. To avoid problems, do not use the FastScanGUI tap or a native scan; use TopManager (on a windows pc) or the ChannelOrganiser tap. It is important that you scan from the correct transmitter and that you remove duplicates and trash channels.
[edit]The file was recorded in 2010 - what was I thinking? Therefore no need for a rescan[/edit]
Quote: The FAT chain does not terminate correctly (16777215) The disk areas allocated to a file are stored as linked chains in the File Allocation Table (FAT) where each entry points to the next entry in the FAT. To signal the end of the chain, the last entry should specify 16777214 but this is missing in your case (16777215 signals that it is a free disk cluster).
You could try the suggested fix but, as both your files are MyStuff related and, are unlikely to exceed one disk cluster (sectors per cluster * 512 bytes) you can probably ignore it (especially as MS should clean them away after 30 days or so - assuming MS 6.5 and depending on how many old backups you have opted to keep).
Alternatively, I think you could just delete these two files using TM, Altair, Antares or TopSet (there should be more recent MS backups); suggest you reboot toppy after deleting them.
Re "The Spin Up Time is not very good"; I arbitrarily define good as being 7 seconds or less (<=7000). Some disks are quicker than others and there isn't anything you can do to improve it, so, if it is working, just live with it. Note: if over time, the spin up time gets "longer" from what it is now, this could indicate that the drive is experiencing mechanical issues (this would be confirmed by the presence of reallocated sectors etc).
In your case, the drive looks sound.

Hi Geoff
Quote:
Please try to play these.
...
Just noticed that "The Emperors New Groove_101003.rec" was recorded today
They both play fine. I don't believe that was recorded that day, I think it was recorded a couple of years ago (I will see what channel it was on when I get home and check radio times listing). I always use ChannelOrganiser and keep the number of channels down, but I'll do a retune just in case.
Incidentally, the playback problems I was getting was recordings just stopping with the native Toppy message "playback stopped" appearing. It happened on a few recordings (BBC 2 and Channel 4 iirc) which fsCheck picked up. I did a VF&F, but it just truncated the recordings to the affected timestamp, so I deleted them.
I only mention this in case it has some relevance. |

Hi Geoff, just tested out fsCheck 1.0, another "boring" one, but a couple of hints :-
The 2 "bad recordings" are short because they are pieces clipped from a longer programme, using TF's onboard editing system.
Maybe there needs to be a check for "(CUT)" in the name as an excuse for being short? Or changing it from an error to a warning: "Did you edit this?"
Scraped from the serial port ...

Hi Geoff
Just stumbled upon fsCheck when browsing. Effortlessly installed and run with TM. Looks okay but posted as requested.

@philbrown
Thanks for the report.
It all looks fine apart from the 2 pending sectors. Should these sectors deteriorate, the drive will attept to remap them resulting in the ReAllocated Sector Count increasing to 2 and the Pending Sector Count being set back to 0.
Might be worth running again in a few weeks to see if it has changed (ideally, you don't want these numbers to increase).
Cheers

@MikB
I have modified the code in the next version so that it won't check the duration of any recording that includes "CUT" in its name.
These files can be generated by several mechanisms including the CutFile tap, the CutAds tap and saving using the native White and Blue buttons. The CUT can appear in several places in the file name but the common characteristic is that it is uppercase (it will not be the end of the world if the true name of a file includes these three characters)
For other readers, the criteria I'm using for a good recording is that used by MyStuff:-
1) a file must be > 0.34 * 1024 * 1024 bytes
2) it must start with the correct magic number ( "TFrc" or 0x54467263)
3) the duration field (5th word) should be > 0.
The file is flagged as a BadRecording if it fails any of the these three tests.
(In MikB's files, the duration was 0 as the cut portion was less than a minute long).
I've also modified the code so that, when possible, it will indicate which of these tests failed (makes it easier to understand why the file is flagged).
@luke.o
CutsAds is also the source of "Failed recording (Transport Stream packets not detected)" flags on recordings that play properly (basically CutAds replaces the packets at the start of the file with NULL packets and therefore the tap cannot detect the correct PID information near the start of the recording).
Rather than reading further into the file (slow), I have modified the next version so that it bypasses the check for the transport streams if it detects one of these NULL packets.
Many thanks to both MikB and luke.0 for their help in diagnosing these problems

Thank you Geoff for creating the tap. Without it I would have just carried on regardless and the problems I was having would not have fixed themselves!
