I'm attempting to replace the drive in a friend's TF5800. (It was suffering crashes, and the original drive was the suspected cause.)

I've got a WD10EZRX drive (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006GDVREI/) and this IDE to SATA adapter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006646698/. I've jumpered pins 5&6 to limit the interface speed. The original drive cable won't reach so I've cut down an 80-way cable from an old computer and plugged the 'master' socket into the drive adapter and the 'slave' socket into the Toppy motherboard.

The Toppy recognised the drive, and offered to reformat it. I selected format and it seemed to do the right thing, but it crashed when displaying the "formatting is complete" message. On reboot it does a VFF and then crashes, not responding to any remote key except power off.

If I hook the drive up to a PC and run TopfHDDoctor it finds no errors. I can 'kill' the disc and put it back in the Toppy, which then reformats it and crashes as above.

Any suggestions for what to try next?

Have the PSU capacitors been replaced in your friend's Toppy?

Never replace a drive without first checking the PSU. PSU failure is the most common cause of disk failure (or apparent disk failure) in a Toppy.

Yes, using one of your kits! And the voltages are all still fine.

Possibly not relevant, but there are some link pins on the adapter to give master/slave/cable

Yes, I forgot to mention that I set it to master. Would the Toppy have formatted it if I hadn't?

Found my problem, and I feel a right idiot. I chopped off the wrong end of the 80 wire IDE cable! I'm surprised it got as far as formatting, and when using the original cable (with the drive suspended above the open Toppy as it wouldn't reach otherwise) also didn't work I assumed the adapter and/or drive was at fault.

With a new 80-wire cable from Maplin (TA23) it formatted OK and was then able to record 2 streams and replay a third, so all appears OK at this early stage. Will install properly when I've finished copying back all the stuff copied from the original 250GB drive.
