Entirely due to the contributors in the 'compatible HDD' & 'compatible PATA/SATA converter' stickies.

HDD = WD7500AADS. A 750Gb Caviar Green SATA drive - very quiet. Thanks to cthatcham2

Converter = 3.5 PATA IDE to SATA Hard HDD Optical Drive Converter Adapter. Copy & paste into eBay - mine was from Gadgetmagicstore, cost 5.99, with free p+p and next day delivery. Thanks to John5800.

The last, an absolute gem, from Bob_Swede. Take an old PC parallel ribbon cable, drill out the blank in the appropriate connector, and fit it BACKWARDS. That is: fit the end that would normally go to the PC motherboard - to the PATA/SATA converter, and the end that would normally go to the PC HDD - to the toppy main board.
I had been trying for ages, with a load of different cables, and getting peed off. I was on the point of giving up and getting the safe Turbosat adapter when I found Bob's post, turned a cable round - SORTED!

I thought the HDD (bought for under 30 on eBay) was a dud when I first tried it, it's so quiet. I'm very happy with the end result. Thanks guys.

One last thing. The PATA/SATA converter has a data transmission led that could be very annoying. I put a blob of nail varnish, 'borrowed' from SWMBO (it was the first thing that came to mind) which has masked it nicely.

I'm looking for a fan next - and have one of these in mind: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scythe-Hard-Drives-Cooler-quot/dp/B001CBA6P0/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1349208598&sr=8-8
Any feedback?

*****UPDATE*****
Having some HDD reliability issues - so this must be regarded as WIP at the moment! Sad

Don't bother with the fan. Just make sure there is plenty of space around the Toppy. 7 years with my Toppy supported on little styrofoam plinths at the corners and plenty of space around it, 500GB HDD upgrade done circa 6 years ago.

"Green" drives are probably cooler than my PATA drive. But, if you must, there are several threads on fans and it would seem that larger blades/slower speeds are less noisy.

For many years the toppy was in an open TV stand. However, a year ago we upgraded to a larger flat screen TV - and SWMBO was not happy! Upshot is a new wooden unit with enclosed sides and restricted ventilation at the back. With the larger disk, I'd sooner err on the side of caution. Capacitor upgrade carried out last month. The 100mm fan unit I mention only runs at 1000rpm, height of 13mm, shifts 26m/hr, and has a noise level of under 15dB (if you can believe the blurb). Interesting, certainly.

Better an overheated Toppy than an overheated missus! Wink
