Oh forgot to add - the hard drive was dated Nov 2010. So allowing a few months for that to be sat in a parts bin and I am quessing it was original as the warranty seal wasn't broken, I am thinking the Toppy is a bout 18 months old. So even if the PSU wasn't at fault, it probably very soon would have been.

Thanks to Geoff Bacon for the idea of booting up without the disk connected. I didn?t think the Topfield would boot at all, but much to amazement it functioned as perfectly good freeview TV. And it did at least stop the damned VF&F and allowed me to see the message before it went into that loop, which was to recommended a factory reset as the firmware had changed.
Just for the record, it was lying. There haven't been any OTA updates for several years. And certainly nothing that would require a Factory Reset on a 5810. In reality, something got corrupted, and made it THINK it had had a firmware update.

So, time to work on the next phase now: Memory Management.

but it?s bound to break again now having said that.

I now do a regular backup of any important series and the program files once a week via USB.

Co-incidence!

I've just had my 5810 back from Turbosat after it's second warranty repair with exactly this fault. Mine was purchased new in Feb 2011.

Is yours a Western Digital 500GB drive?

If so, apparently they have had more issues with the WD 2010 models than with older drives.

Unfortunately these are the latest they have.

As you're not under warranty, you might want to look at sourcing a different drive - there is a thread around somewhere with a list of known working drives
