Yes, but you need a SATA/IDE adapter. Be warned that not all cards work in the Toppy. See other threads for details of working adapters.

While shopping around for a new drive for my toppy I found this place that has three used 500Gb WD Caviar Blue WD5000AAKB discs for 42.80 each plus delivery - thought it might be of interest to people who didn't want to go down the SATA/IDE adapter lottery route.

I finished up ordering one of the Samsung EcoGreen SATA discs from Aria, so I've got no idea what microwarehouse are like to deal with, but thought that someone round here might be interested.

-Mark.

So the big question is, do I move the working drive from my toppy into the knackered one I bought on ebay and upgrade mine to 500Gb, or do I just put the 500Gb in the knackered one???

The easiest option is to not touch your existing Toppy, only touch the 'knacked one'.

After putting up with noise and vibration finally tried replacing original 160 drive with an Hitachi Deskstar 320 Gb. I thought I had cracked it virtually silent. Sadly when I tried replaying a recording the picture broke up (similar to poor signal). Put old drive back worked fine. Tried 320 Gb again - still poor. Drive works fine for normal computer use so rather puzzled. Is it an issue with data bus loading? Have other spare 160 Gb IDE drives but they all seem to draw around 0.9 A at 12 V while the original and the Hitachi quote 0.5A so concerned I might overload PSU by trying them. Could interference on Hitachi drive be an early symptom of capacitor issues mentioned elsewhere? Help appreciated if there are still people out there.

Before you selected the replacement drive, have you looked at the summary page?
Summary of working and non-working drives
Generally speaking Hitachi drives have been known to not work very well in toppies....

Not specifically, but if your forum join date is indicative of the age of your Toppy, it may be due for some new capacitors soon.

I haven't looked up that particular one, but I'm pretty sure I recall from somewhere that the Hitachi Deathstar drives typically don't work well in the Toppy.

Thank you all for your comments and helpful links - my searches had not revealed the list of discs. Will try replacing the 40 ribbon cable with an 80 to see if that helps with the hitachi drive. If that fails will try SATA with an interface as I have both in my spares cupboard.

On the capacitor front - is a capacitor upgrade advised or is it capacitor replacement due to high operating temperature ageing? Sadly my Toppy has been sitting on the shelf unplugged for the last three years because of the noise it made (had a Thomson which did the job without the noise). Thus capacitors haven't been exposed to much long term heat. If the capacitors are an upgrade would be interested in purchasing a kit Andyfras (new to forum and haven't worked out how I email you yet).

Have just lost analogue signals here so second recorder more desirable - As someone returning to Toppy use after a three year break I was most impressed with the search facilities in the latest mystuff - well done to its originator and contributers.

Thanks again for the quick helpful responses,
Roy

As it's been inactive for 3 years, you've probably got a few more years before the capacitors need replacing.

It's not significantly an upgrade in terms of performance, but as the replacement capacitors are much better than the originals, they will last a lot longer.

You can contact me by clicking on PM at the bottom of any of my posts.

Bear in mind that not all SATA drives, and not all adapters will work either. Check the sticky link in the Firmwares, enhancements and upgrades section (where you've posted this thread).

Hi
I?m thinking of putting a new hard drive in my tf5800. I read you?re posting with interest, can you tell me the make, type and serial numbers of the 400 gb one you fitted.
Thanks,
Derek
