I've been quite busy with my 5810 following the April 18th DSO change. And I have found that some of the taps I want to run don't always run reliably (TapCommander, PcControl etc) unless I press "0" at start.

I noticed that I had only 8MB of memory free with all the auto programs running, but I don't know how much memory is expected, so I don't really know if 8MB is a problem or normal.

And yes Juwlz I have already trimmed the number of channels TV + Radio is about 36.

I do have a fair number of MyStuff searches however: 105. Is there any way to export some of the searches to a file and then reimport them later? - I'm thinking of series which are on say 12 weeks in a year, and me keeping the record of what has been recorded, but in effect archiving the search until needed next year.

I do have all of the taps installed by MyStuff running, and I wondered which of these were essential, and if there are any I could remove to give me more free memory. I'm also not entirely sure what they all do.

Are there are any other tips on managing memory on a 5810?

Please post your Myinfo Log file ("Display| MyInfo Log" in TM)

You may have recently answered the following questions but my memory isn't what it used to be:
1) How old is your toppy?
2) Have the capacitors been changed?

Ideally, you want as much free memory as possible but I think that 8 Mb is ok (IIRC, problems occur when it gets down to around 4 Mb)

You shouldn't need to archive your searches, that is just making life more complicated.

I think we need specific examples of the problems you are encountering ("don't always run reliably" is too vague).

Geoff

The only TAP in your sig that I'd consider non-essential (but useful) is MyInfo ... and that exits as soon as it has run, so doesn't take any memory once your Toppy's up and running anyway.

Your searches files are just text files, but they do have reference numbers in them to identify the different searches, so I wouldn't recommend trying to add deleted searches back in by editing the file manually. You could, however, save the file and convert it to a spreadsheet - import it as if it was a CSV file and use as the field delimiter.

That will give you a reference to use to re-add deleted searches at a later date using the MyStuff UI (or possibly the API).

It's easy enough to exit from MyStuff for infrequently-used purposes, so I'd take that approach.

Actually, Font Manager is non-essential too - if you want to do without it. Whether it's worth it is your choice.

Julie

P.S. My 5810 has about 8Mb free too. I think that's probably about as good as it's likely to get with MyStuff running. Click on the link to 5810 in my sig for more details on my setup.

Yep, had the PSU upgraded before I started using it. (I had an old 5810 die slowly on me, so I thought the new one should be sorted out before I started using it)

Well if all the autorun taps load, and I then try and run PcControl the 5810 crashes and reboots with a verify files. If I hold down "0" and run PcControl it doesn't crash. If I try and run TapCommander with the autoruns taps, sometimes i get an interface, at other times not. If I hold down "0" it runs OK.

The MyInfo Log looks ok (as far it goes - you didn't post the full log).

Who replaced the capacitors and how many? (I think it should be 6 for a 5810)
Is the Toppy put into standby overnight?
Is there plenty of airflow around the toppy?

When you get problems like this, the thing is to try and identify the cause:-
1) Make sure PcControl is not in Auto Start (I can't tell because you haven't pasted that bit of the log)
2) Make sure TapCommander is not in Auto Start
3) Run TopManager and use "Tools| Remove Bad EPG Files"
4) Use "Tools| Check MyStuff" to see if that detects any problems
5) Reboot the toppy and wait 30 mins for EPG2MEI to regenerate the EPG files - do not touch the remote in this period
6) Check out whether or not MyStuff is working as expected.

If the above doesn't work then you need to work at fixing that.
1) Run the HDDInfo tap (you can't run the one in TopManager because you aren't running the PcControl tap). Use TM Display function and paste the results
2) Run the SignalMonitor tap, press record to save (?) and paste the results (TM Display)

Try running TapCommander using the native menus and see what happens

Suggest you don't run PcControl for now; it doesn't sound as though it has anything to do with your problems so it is easier to keep it out of the equation.

Geoff

[edit]Rereading your post, TapCommander won't display a menu when it is run from Auto Start - you have to press Menu twice to bring up the screen [/edit]

The original post question was really a more general one about memory management on a 5810. As I said, if running TAPs that are only used infrequently causes an issue, just exit MyStuff before running them.

I think we're basically just up against the limited memory available on a 5810 (which is less than on a 5800), and once the channels have been pruned, and a bit of housekeeping has been done to weed out unwanted searches and recordings, there's not a lot else that can be done.

MyStuff does use a lot of memory (for performance reasons), so the easiest way to free up memory when it's required is to go to the MyStuff menu and use the last Z option to exit.

@Geoff Bacon
I'm familiar with most of the issues you have raised, I don't think they are causing the probs.

The only autoruns are the ones needed for mystuff, all of the other are manual

I got the PSU upgrade from Goldstar Computers Ltd on ebay (Cleveland, Stockton-On-Tees)

I have worked out what to do for minor adjustment, and I found your tap & app particualry helpful with re-creating and re-ordering fav lists, but I suspect that I will only need to access that type of thing on the odd occasion.

If I get random restarts, I know what to do: restart holding "0" and use TM to delete the dodgy files etc.

... And once MyStuff 6.5 gets released, you'll be able to do all that from the Toppy / MyStuff UI.

I've been experimenting today to see how much memory my own Toppies have, both TAPless and with MyStuff and all the associated TAPS (see the links to 5800 and 5810 in my sig for the details). My tests were not particularly scientific, as the setups on the two machines are not identical (for instance, the 5800 is running MS 6.4, and the 5810 is running a pre-release test version of MyStuff 6.5).

I've also been trawling to find information on what constitutes dangerously low memory on a Toppy.

The results were:
Code:

Machine  Avail-Mem-TAPless  Avail-Mem+MS   Recordings   Searches   Timers
 5800          20MB             11MB           529        182        36
 5810          15MB              7MB            72        199        25

Both machines have 26 TV and 10 Radio channels. The memory info above was provided by MyInfo shortly after startup.

The figures above show that MyStuff on my 5800 uses 9MB, compared with 8MB on my 5810. The difference is presumably due to the smaller number of recordings (and possibly timers) on my 5810 (which has a small drive and is primarily used as a test machine). NB: If you use rt2mei data, the memory required by MyStuff will be greater. Actually, now I think about it, I recently used the MyStuff installer to reinstall everything on my 5800, and that includes downloaded EPG data which does currently still include 5 days' worth of additional rt2mei data in my EPG.

For the record, TAP Commander reports MyStuff as by far the greatest user of memory. See here for screenshots and more details. In particular, MS on my 5800 was, at the time using 1.3MB more memory than on the 5810 - presumably mostly due to the presence of the additional rt2mei data. Sometime I'll experiment with MyStuff memory usage on a machine without any channels deleted and update the article with the results.

Alarm bells should be ringing if your free/available memory drops to 5MB. At that level you can reasonably expect the Toppy's poor memory handling to start causing memory corruptions, and when that happens, expect the unexpected!

Julie
