I have assessed the damage and U51,BC100 &Q22 are all burnt out. How easy is it to replace surface mount chips? What price are the chips as the economic viability question is starting to come into play. It does still work as a freeview receiver!

As for the HDD, it's just old recordings, say-la-vie. It also explained to me why I couldn't see the HDD options on start up.

The price of these components is small (<1). Removing and fitting them is quite fiddly. I can do the job for you (and probably also fix your HDD) if you want to send me your Toppy, or I can supply you with the components, if you feel confident to do the job yourself.

What happened to the forum there? ... Anyway, I think the idea of replacing the components is a good one. How do I buy them from you and I'll have a go?

A question on the PSU voltages ...

My friend has a 5800 and has replaced the caps some time back (about 6m). All was well until recently the system started playing up (disk not recording, not booting properly etc). Checked the voltages .. not quite right ... checked caps ... and there was a dry joint on one of them. Resoldered and remeasured against my own 5800 when box is on .. result:

Code:

Marked      Mine        His
30          30.9         30.49
22          24.8         24.46
17          17           16.79
8            7.5          7.45
5            4.98         4.94
3.3          3.3          2.87
15          15           15.3

which I think are OK EXCEPT for the 3.3V. None of the caps are damaged and the regulators (U1, U2) look OK too. I can't work out why the 3.3V is so low. What is the consequence? And... any idea why the difference?

Mike

When your friend replaced his capacitors, did he just do the 6 x 1000uF 16V ones and were they good quality ones (not Maplin, eBay etc.)? It's also worthwhile replacing C26 & C27 (470uF 10V) as these affect the 3.3V rail.

The 3.3V rail feeds the main processor (via a 1.5V regulator) and other logic/memory chips AFAIK.

You should also check the 12V for the HDD.

When his capacitors were changed, did he stick to the "usual suspects"? This would be a set of 6 capacitors.

The 3.3V line is controlled by a seventh capacitor, and this isn't always changed out.

See http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Topfield_5800/PSU_Repair#Problems_with_the_3.3V_line

The consequence is that the CPU won't be getting powered correctly. 2.85V seems to be the point at which other people report an unstable system with booting problems. It is worth considering a change to this...

The original article about PSU repairs suggested that possibly only 5off 1000uF 16V capacitors were required. C25 in the 3.3V supply (also a 1000uf 16V) appears to fail just as often as any other capacitor.

The caps replaced on mine and his were the CPCFarnell ones:

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?sku=CA05144

and the "usual 6" were replaced as per the advice on the board - they were all 1000uF.

But not C26/C27. I'd need some 470uF caps I guess. Any advice as to supply?

Just incase this helps anyone...

Over a period of several months I started to get more frequent instances where my Toppy (5800) would be locked on the setup menu and would require a rescan in order to get back to normal functionality. Eventualy, it got so bad that it would reboot at exactly the same % of a channel scan, and just take me back to the setup menu. In effect, the device was dead.

Therefore I done the capacitor mod to the PSU (I used 1200uf, 25V caps from Farnell). When I reassembled the Toppy and powered on, I was dismayed to have exactly the same issue (although, the reboot seemed to happened later in the channel scan process).

I then performed a reformat of the hard drive. Once this was done, the Toppy once again became functional. This was around 3 weeks ago, I've since re-installed MyStuff and it's still holding out.

I don't know if the PSU was faulty and caused a corrupt hard drive, or maybe something else caused a drive error.

So, if you do the PSU mod and things don't immediately jump to life, try a disc reformat, but be aware you will loose all your recordings and TAP's, which is why I tried the PSU mod first (in the hope I would not loose the recordings).

Regards,

Glenn

Hi,

I appear to be in the same predicament as quite a few others. Hard drive corrupted, etc etc.

Can anyone provide me with links for the 1000 and 470 microfarad caps or anyone selling kits.

Need this asap as the wife has started recording on my sky+

Any help appreciated

Paul

See andyfras's post and signature a couple of posts above yours.

To contact him hit the PM button just below his signature.

However, on a 5810 hard drive corruption may not be as a result of power supply problems. Even on a 5800 you should measure the power supply voltages first to determine if that is the cause of the problem.
