Hi Alan,
You're spot on. My Freeview signal is not great and is very unreliable. I seem to pick up signals from multiple sources. It ought to be great as I'm only 5 miles away from the transmitter in Dover.

Wolfbane
Enter your postcode into
http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?

The Wolfbane site gives a compass bearing and distance to the
transmitter. You can quickly check in which direction your aerial is pointing

If you click on the link in the Wolfbane results table (table heading OS
grid ref) you will get a diagram of the terrain between you and the
transmitter.

You need a Postscript viewer to see the picture. A small utility can be
downloaded from
http://www.rops.org/

The older version 5.3 is 350kbytes and is free - see link in the opening
page. This older version is OK for viewing the Wolfbane picture.

If the file from Wolfbane downloads as txpath.exe just rename it to
txpath.ps before opening it in RoPS.

Assuming that you need to get signals from Dover use the FastscanGui TAP and chose Dover as your transmitter.

http://www.tapworld.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=597&Itemid=1

Afterwards download and manually run the Signal Monitor TAP which will give details of your signal reception and signal quality for both Toppy tuners. This TAP also produces a text log file with the same results.

http://www.tapworld.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=318&Itemid=1

Dover transmits at the high end of the transmitter band, Channel 68, for some TV channels. If you have an older degraded aerial downlead it is the high channels that tend to go first. If you are going to employ an aerial installer make sure that he fits a high quality fully copper screened cable of the CT100 type - as used for satellite.

Hi,

Since updating the firmware and installing MyStuff 6.2 yesterday my 5800 has become 'sluggish'.

It's slow to respond to key presses on the remote.

i used to be able to scroll continuously through the guide and my archive but now it keeps pausing (albeit momentarily).

I can hear hard disc activity every 4 seconds even when it's not playing anything.

Is this normal and I just need to get used to it?

Many thanks,

David

How much "available" memory do you have after the Toppy has been on for, say, 30 minutes? This is the amount of RAM and not the amount left on the hard disk.

Myinfo is again the way to find out.
On switch on it reported:
Memory - Free: 13 MB, Available: 11 MB

but this is just after it swiched on so after the box has been on for a period of time run Myinfo manually -

Press Archive
Repeatedly press << or >> to toggle to Program Files
Go into Auto Start
Highlight MyInfo
Press OK

MyInfo should start up with an on screen display which should report the available memory. Anyway it will write a full text log file to the disk at the same time. Note: this file will be overwritten the next time you come out of standby so if you need the information 30 minutes after switch on you need to copy the log file back to the PC before switching to standby.

As with any sluggish behaviour switch the Toppy off at the mains for two minutes to give it a full cold boot. Afterwards see if the remote responds faster and if it gets slower over a period of time.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for this advice.

Just ran MyInfo after 30 mins - it actually displayed the results directly on the screen.

Available memory = 10 MB.

I'll try a cold reboot in a moment.

David

That's OK - it only seems to be a problem if it gets to around 3MB or less. It's only around 20Mbytes to start with.

Just performed a cold reboot and it's running much faster.

I can still hear the hard disc churning away every few seconds though.

I'll leave it on for a while and see if it settles down.

Thanks for the tips Alan - really appreciated.

The disc noise was due to the timeshifting option having been switched back on during the firmware upgrade.

Silence now reigns!

The other thing to check (for sluggish response) would be whether Interactive Services also got switched back on (assuming it was off before).
