I'm pleased to announce that I now know the provisional dates for the OTA of firmware 5.13.40 - which also comes with what looks like a committment to keep broadcasting the firmware, so that as many people as possible can be sure of updating without having to connect to their computer.

Note, of course, that these dates could be changed, but at the moment, this is what's being worked to:

First OTA 15th to 17th March, 2007
Second OTA 27th to 30th March, 2007

Additional OTAs will probably be around the middle of each month.

Nigel.

I refer to the thread about this firmware, where I've answered that question already.

The 2005 news link says that installing an OTA update is a manual process using the menu option. I thought from 5.12.88 that the installation is automatic if you are tuned to the right multiplex at the time the update is being broadcast. My Toppy had the twinkle, the flashing broken lines, several times during December just before crashing and required a reboot to sort out the problem. I assumed it had picked up a OTA update for another model.
Could sombody confirm the OTA update procedure for firmware 5.12.88.

It's still a manual procedure; the only change is the twinkle, as far as I know.

I'm very glad to hear that after having been bitten by bad OTAs on other models that couldn't be backed out.
The ability to upgrade the f/w manually from downloads was a big plus on the Toppy for me.

I could not agree more with 'vroomfondle'. Unless you find it VERY difficult to attach your toppy to a pc you should always update firmware from the pc. Also if you are using the new wireless solution, you should revert to the usb connection for the update.

Why? I use a Slug, and the firmware update always works. Have you emperical evidence that non-TFDN updates have a lower failure rate than ftp methods?

I'm afraid I'm mystified there as well; there is no difference between different methods of updating; there's no reason why people shouldn't wait for the OTA rather than using the PC if that's what they wish.

This news item from the last update gives an outline of the procedure:

http://www.toppy.org.uk/static/otaDec.html

Newer firmwares (Bastille and later) will show a twinkling 'New' indication in the info bar when a firmware is detected.

....

My point was I personally will never use OTA after bad experiences of OTA on other freeview kit. It remains to be seen if Toppy OTA is painless. We know the other methods are foolproof.

In the "New users start here ~ Which firmware should I be using?" thread, the recommended firmware is still listed as Bastille day. Is this correct, or has this new firmware been adequately tested and has now become the recommended firmware for all users?

Thanks in advance for your clarification on this matter.

Well, I'd tend to recommend the new firmware, but I've been a bit busy (redesigning the whole of the site for a fabulous birthday makeover) to update the guidance note.

In any event, you may want to wait a little longer and read the experiences of those who are using the firmware already. If you skip the first OTA, there will be repeats.

Nigel.
