I have noticed recently on a number of occasions that my Toppy has come out of standby when it is not due to record for some time. It is not a clock error as I check the time frequently each morning. I suspect it is due to me tinkering with the TV. I don't know much about HDMI, but does it have a 'wake-up' signal like in SCART connectors that could be causing it?

A 5810 will try to wake up a tv via hdmi when the toppy switches on.

It will depend on the tv - mine doesn't, but I'm using an hdmi switch, and it does (annoyingly!!).

For me it's the other way round. My TV is becoming faulty at power on and I have to coax it into life.

Has the front panel clock battery ever been replaced (5810 only)?

It's several years since I replaced the PSU capacitors in your Toppy; I now replace all 13 rather than just the 9 I probably did then.

The capacitors were replaced as a precautionary measure and AFAIK all 13 were done (date in my sig).

The battery has yet to be replaced which is why I check the clock is correct when left in standby. There doesn't appear to be anything amiss with the Toppy apart from waking up occasionally when not required.

I strongly recommend replacing the battery. Several have failed after about 4 years; yours is definitely on borrowed time.

The battery (CR2032) is readily available and it's fairly simple to do. Only a screwdriver is required.

OK Toppy won't be in use most of tomorrow morning so I will replace it then.

I now have this image of you as Basil Fawlty, thrashing your TV with an RF aerial lead ...
