This is two separate TF5800's acting up at the same time. Just asking here if anyone else has noticed this over late 15th/early 16th January?

Toppy 1: Recording BBC Two, watching BBC One, main picture froze - no response to remote. Power off gave four flickering dots and then a VFF on restart. The recorded file (BBC Two) had been correctly closed off at 43 mins (of 1 hour) and was playable, if a little short! Must've been about 9:40pm when this happened.

Toppy 2: Recording on BBC Four -- file is full size, but reports as invalid file (0 mins). Watchable after recfixer run on it. Was "watching" BBC One during this. Around midnight when this failed.

Second recording from 4Music: 180Mb (implausibly short), 0 mins, invalid file. Topfield rebooted itself as below. Also "watching" BBC One. Around 00:52 (8 mins into programme)

Third recording later on BBC Four -- 0 mb, 0 mins, invalid file, described as "," only. Topfield rebooted at this one -- attached PC shows a disconnect-connect-disconnect-connect cycle in system logs. (1:26am, and again 2:57am after recording all done).

So, was there a disturbance in the Freeview content overnight around BBC channels? Both machines have been rock solid for months, not missing or corrupting anything Smile

Previously ITV did some changes to stream IDs that caused Topfields to record practically empty files until a rescan, so I'm mindful of that.

Sutton Coldfield transmitter.

I know that it is a bit of a coincidence for both to play up at the same time, but have you yet had all the capacitors in the PSUs replaced (or the PSUs replaced)? This sort of unreliability often results from them getting old.

Two different models (TF5800 black panther, TF5800 silvery face-lift)

Black Panther has been recapped (voltages started wandering), with decent (Farnell) caps. It runs 24/7 and has a monster size fan (running slowly) on top. 12.02/5.04v on the external molex.

Silvery Facelift is much newer, not recapped ever, runs only when needed, and has a fan internally over the critical caps area. Voltages not checked, yet.

I'm not ruling out PSU issues, but find it odd that suddenly both act up after no such problems.

Got a spontaneous reboot again overnight on Black Panther, at 3:56am, no programmes harmed.

Signal problems would affect both toppies.

True. Quality and Strength at full-tilt on the bargraphs, and Signal Monitor agrees 100:100:100

It just did it again, while I was sat near it. Heard the hard drive spin down.

Live TV had crashed (stuttering two frames alternating, BBC One), nothing to put into the timeshift buffer so the hard drive went to sleep. No response to USB or output on serial port, so clearly something was wedged. And on power off, 4 flashing dots. Verifying Files And Folders on restart.

I will de-lid and check all voltages on both machines later today and make sure.

If no-one else is seeing this, it must be a double-coincidence, or other factors that only affect me Smile

I'd be very surprised if there are many people running a toppy like your signature suggests.

MyInfo has an .ini file which makes clear which patches, if any, are missing.

Suggest you post the MyInfo log.

It's best to not have an indicated 100% signal level, as it could mean it's a lot more. I recommend reducing the strongest signal to about 90% by reducing the gain in the aerial amplifier or by using an attenuator. Maintaining 100% signal quality is the important part.

I'm not sure what the comment about my signature/machine means, it was generated by MyInfo in the first place.

Firmware and TAPS are unchanged on both machines. I didn't break anything.

Myinfo says nothing about any missing patches, anyway. Here's the MyInfo log.

@andyfras: Signal strength has been 100% ever since SC turned up to full digital power in Sep 2011? with no changes to aerial/cabling/distribution amp etc. I take your point that too much signal can be a problem.

Anyway, voltages checked: Still all within reasonable bounds :-

Black Panther: (Re capped) 5.08v/12.3v/3.27v for main rails, then 30.7/24.6/17/7.65/15.5 for the rest
Silver Facelift: Not recapped: 4.97/11.8v/3.31v for main rails, then 29.6/24.1/16.4/7.38/14.88 for the rest.

It won't if the .ini file is missing.

@ccs Right I've added the .ini file for MyInfo and changed my signature, does that mean that it will stop rebooting now?

Or to put it another way, can you explain (please) what the cryptic comment was about my machine being somehow unusual -- as you didn't proffer an expansion last time.

... and how any of this might affect things Smile

@andyfras -- I've put a passive Y-splitter in-line with the aerial feed, in lieu of a real attenuator. Now I'm seeing (8X:9X:100) on tuner 1's signal strength, and (100:100:100) still on Tuner 2.

So it's knocked the signal back a little, but Tuner 2 still sees full whack, I assume because of Tuner 1's pass-through amplifying a bit. I've got the usual daisy chained arrangement of aerial into 1, 1 out looped into 2.

You know it won't, but maybe some else will be able to help.

(You're not running the current recommended firmware as far as I can tell.)

@ccs: Thanks for explaining -- not sure why you didn't just say that though.

The last firmware I put on was the split-NIT-fix update, which was absolutely vital to operation, as you will probably know. Anything after that -- no.

Software Vers TF-NPT 5.12.25 (as supplied)
(5.12.88 now updated to Bastille)
(5.13.40 now Mar 07)
(5.13.56 now Jul 07)
(5.13.65 now Nov 08 )

Toppy firmware updates

It's not as straight forward as it might seem - depends how much you've been following the forum over the last couple of years or so.

Most people use MyStuff and the Mystuff installer which does everything including firmware.

This link might give you some clues to do a firmware update.

I've had a look down that list of patches (as described on the linked pages) and nothing stands out as a patch that I really have to have. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.

I've been leaving the Topfield "resting" on channel 5 overnight instead of BBC1. It hasn't rebooted spontaneously since. Signal attenuator still in place as per above.

For one night (23rd), due to timers firing up on BBC3 and 4, it got itself resting on BBC4, and later at 3:40 am - reboot.

I'm still thinking that the Beeb have changed something, or are experimenting late at night. I've turned Interactive services off now, out of pure superstition, and we'll see if that helps.
