Hi all Having had two years exceptional performance from my Toppy I am now faced with a problem or two which is making me scratch what little hair I have left out of my head. All was fine until I got a message telling me to upgrade the firmware. I carried out a full install via Altair of the full My Stuff including the new f/w. I missed out the factory reset instruction (I didn't read Juwles notes for new users unfortunately). I have since had so many problems that I am now in the position that I could do with a friendly walkthru to get my box correctly functioning again.
Here is a brief list of what has gone wrong and what I have so far done to get to where I am currently. The first sign of malfunctioning was that recordings would not play to the end. ie Playback stopped. On re-booting Toppy went through 'checking files and folders' and then falling over on the auto start of My Stuff which goes OK until the 'L' roundel and then goes into the constant re-boot cycle. A trawl through the forums seemed to indicate that the problem was with the EPG MEI 2 files which I replaced and all seemed well for a week or two. Then the problems started again and again. I took Toppy to Mike Powell in Bolton and he renewed the capacitors. Excellent service and only 25 for the work. Thank you again Mike. On returning the machine to its reserved place on the shelf I was once again confronted with the dreaded boot loop I re-installed My Stuff (full install inc f/w) and once again the toppy seemed to work ok for a while. I was listening to a radio recording and the box decided to switch off and go into a boot cycle again. I have only had these symptoms whilst attempting to run my stuff and the box performs perfectly with no TAPS running (which is how it has been used for the last week or two) The last error message on re-booting was an out of memory error 111. It was then that I started banging my head on the wall. I now have the weekend to try and rescue the 'normal' running of my box. What I need to know is the order(method) of re-installing the O/S TAPS etc. Can I delete the files in the folders? Do I need to do a re-format? Will a factory re-set get rid of the corruption? Does the 'empty files' TAP do the same as manually deleting the data? As the box is playing up I cannot give you a 'my info' signature as all I can retrieve is dated 2010 and this is quite obviously not current and makes very little sense. I am prepared to re-format if necessary but I do not fully understand when to 'factory reset' during the recovery processes. Any help gratefully recieved. Thanks Browser ...Apologies if this has been posted in the wrong section B

Switch on Toppy, immediately hold down the 0 button on the remote until the picture appears. This will stop any TAPs loading.

Now do a factory reset. This will leave you at the tuning screen, so allow it to tune. (Note that EmptySettings is only needed if it is impossible to get into menus to do a factory reset). A factory reset does not affect the contents of the hard drive.

Run MyInfo (probably in the AutoStart folder). Copy the MyInfo log to a PC, then post it here.

Reboot Toppy to allow MyStuff to update channels.

If you have duplicate channels or channels from more than one transmitter, this will cause problems. There are TAPs that can help with this if it's a problem.

Just copied. Nothing on there makes much sense . Disk seems well and truly corrupted. Time for a re-format?

The MyInfo log you posted is the sample one. Did you actually copy the log file from your Toppy?

Out of Memory Error 111 means that MyStuff has found more channels in the EPG file than you have on your Toppy (I googled Out of Memory 111 Mystuff) - which potentially means that your EPG file is corrupt.

To start off with, you could use Geoff Bacon's TopManager to remove the EPG files, but I suspect the real problem is that you left it too long to get the PSU repaired, and your disk has suffered damage.

Julie

@browser

Sounds as though you don't have anything worth keeping on the disk so you may as well reformat it (I'm assuming that you didn't have any config files to put back on the box). Suggest you do the following (in the specified order):-
1) "Format Hard Disk" in the toppy (from the Installation Menu)

2) Install MyStuff using installer (you want the firmware, the patches and utilities; probably yes to everything it asks!)

3) Install TopManager (link in my signature)
3a) Connection| Settings - create a USB (probably) connection
3b) Connection| Open
3c) Tools| Install Files| PcControl

4) Reboot toppy
4a) if you have never done a FACTORY RESET with this version of the firmware then do one now; while this will lock you into the menus, you will still be able to do step 5.

5) PcControl| Show Menus, then PcControl| Channel Management
5a) Select "Identify My transmitter" in combo box; set restriction to "at least 4 muxes" and double click "Winter Hill"
5b) Perform Scan
5c) Right click in display, Select "all Pay, Porn...", then "Delete Channels"
5d) Finalize

6) Add any other Taps you want to the "Auto Start" folder (use Tools| Install Files?)

7) Reboot toppy and check all looks ok with MyStuff running

8 ) Snapshot| Take
(This will make a copy of \ProgramFiles to make it easier to recover from)

9) Display| MyStuff
9a) Ctrl A (Select all), Ctrl C (Copy); add to this thread and Ctrl V.

10) Tools| Update Forum Profile - use Build to set up a forum signature

After you have been running for a while, do another "SnapShot| Take" to update your config files (you have to rename the previous snapshot if you want to take a complete one rather than an update).

Note: The above instructions say choose "Winter Hill" whereas your profile says "Location: Warrington -Winter Hill+ Welsh T/X". Please be aware that you can get EPG problems using multiple transmitters i.e. set it up for Winter Hill first and only add the Welsh T/X when you are know that everything is ok (the Welsh T/X may be the source of your problems anyway as disks can get wiped if the signal quality is crap).

Talking about signals; you may as well check/paste what you have got (use "PcControl| Signal Monitor" or use the SignalMonitor tap stored in \ProgramFiles\Utilities by the MS installer - perhaps I'm teaching you how to suck eggs?)

Anyway do the above with TM or the best you can without it and post the MyInfo.log and Signal data.

Geoff

MyStuff accesses loads more files on the drive than the native Toppy (which will typically only be accessing a maximum of 3 at any given time - 2 recordings and 1 playback. This means that any hard drive problems will be far more apparent when running MyStuff, and not that MyStuff is the cause. It's just highlighting the problems with the drive more quickly.

As previously suggested, I suspect you may have left it too long to get the PSU repaired, and it damaged the drive before you got it fixed. You should prepare yourself for having to replace the drive. These days that also means a SATA/PATA adaptor. Both drives and adaptors need to be chosen carefully. Many will not work in a Toppy (or worse, will work for a short period of time before failing). There are sticky threads in the Firmware and Upgrades section of the forum dealing with this.
Quote:
Can I delete the files in the folders?
Yes, but you'll lose the information they contain, of course.
Quote:
Do I need to do a re-format?
It's probably the only way you'll get your hard drive to work now - but that may only be a temporary fix. If you reformat, there's no point deleting files first.
Quote:
Will a factory re-set get rid of the corruption?
No.
Quote:
Does the 'empty files' TAP do the same as manually deleting the data?
No. It does the same as a Factory Reset. If you can do that from the menu, there's no need to use EmptySettings.

BTW, for the sake of completeness, it's not a TAP. It's sort of pseudo firmware that will do a reset. To use it you have to install in the same way as firmware (you have to do it the old-fashioned way, using TFDN_USB from the Topfield Tools).
Quote:

You don't really need to Factory Reset at all.

The first thing that might be worth trying is to install TopfHDRW and see if you can repair the drive using that (you'll need to take the drive out of the Toppy and connect it to your PC using a caddy or similar).

If you can access anything on the drive (or have an old backup), I would say the most useful piece of information will be your MyStuff Settings Export file (I can't remember the full name, but it'll be in /ProgramFiles/Settings/MyStuff, and have Export in the name Wink.) Copy it to your PC's hard drive.

If it recovers anything much, delete the EPG files and then try putting the drive back in the Toppy. If it works, great.

If not, try reformatting the drive.

Either way, reinstall MyStuff using the installer (no need to reinstall the Firmware - that's not stored on the drive anyway). If you had to reformat the hard drive, use the MyStuff Settings Export file (it's a text file) to recreate your MyStuff settings.

Then clean up the dross channels, as per Geoff's post.

Julie

Well that doesn't look too bad (but it would have been easier to do it with TM!)

BTW, you have a mismatched [/size] at the end of your signature; you can delete it,or add the matching size at the start or just ignore it (alternatively, use TM)

Sorry guys me again, after a few weeks of trouble free operation I seem to have gone in a full circle with the original problem of Toppy not playing back recordings.
This is seriously looking as though a new hard drive is needed. The box is recording OK(record length etc all fine) but will not playback more than a few seconds before it stops with the native 'playback stopped' message. Strange though it will playback my radio recordings but nothing off the TV. My next question is what type of hard drive will be needed as a replacement and is there a walkthru on the forum for me to study before I take a hammer to the insides(just joking for now). BTW it now doesn't even playback in native mode IE with no TAPS running. B
