I have just acquired a bit of kit (Hot Air SMD Rework Station) that will enable me to replace, amongst other things, a faulty USB chip (U54, NET2270) on a Toppy.
I've seen a few with this fault, but I need to know if it's worth me trying to source the chips, probably directly from China, as they are not readily available. I have 2 faulty mainboards that I can use for spares for this and maybe other chips. |

Ooooh! I have a spare 5800 which I believe is ok except for the USB (blown by one too many USB plug-ins when I was running & upgrading two side by side).
I would be interested ... depending on your cost plus p&p of mainboard or whole box. |

I suspect my 5800 was one of the ones passing through your hands with a duff USB.
I too am interested but don't really want to be without it for a while as everything is hunky dory at the moment..... [touches wood].
Do you want to PM me too? |

I can now reveal that the initial repair of mavison's mainboard was not successful. I suspect that the USB chip from the donor mainboard was faulty. I swapped it with my spare mainboard, so mavison's Toppy is now fully operational.
I have managed to source the chips from China and they arrived today, so I set about repairing mavison's original mainboard (again). This time I was successful.
It's a lot trickier than I thought it would be, but hopefully it'll get easier with practice. |

| Congratulations! I am glad you beat it into submission. Excellent service as usual. I hope you have a few more to do! |

I did use desolder braid to clear solder bridges between the pins.
In order to see what I was doing, I doubled up the reading glasses, but the microscope sounds a much better idea. |

While following the eBay link for the microscope, I came across this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-60X-Microscope-Jewelry-Loupe-LED-Magnifier-Currency-Detecting-Pocket-/230738421995?
which I've splashed out on.
I'll let you know how it is when I get it. |
