Hi there.

I need to create some DVD's from recordings on my toppy.

I am a Linux (Ubuntu) user so the usual programs listed in the sticky thread do not apply.

I have transferred the files from the toppy to my computer.

I'm currently using 'Handbrake' to convert the files to MKV, which is taking ages, so that I can hopefully find an app to edit (remove the leading and trailing time, remove adverts, etc), and then hopefully burn to a DVD.

Is there an application that can edit / write the rec files directly? I've tried PiTiVi which just displayed corrupted output, if it read the .rec file at all, DeVeDe said it was an unsupported file format, so I guess I have to convert to a 'workable' format before I can edit the video first.

I have even thought of connecting the toppy to a DVD recorder (via the TV Out) and doing it the 'old fashioned' way, play the programme on the toppy and record it on the DVD Recorder, but that does seem a bit 'old school'.

Has anyone got a good guide on how to do this, I feel like I am just stumbling around here.

Thanks.

you can convert to a ts file using rec2ts.php available somewhere on this site. you might have better luck editing buring the ts file. Or use projectx to edit the files demux - and them put them back together in avidemux

I personally us rec2ts and then convert to an avi using ffmpeg. I don't bother removing the ads.

The best thing I have found for this is projectx - which is mentioned elsewhere in this site

The simplest thing to use is VideoRedo. This is not free however. It takes a rec file, allows you to edit it, and will burn a disc, all in one operation. There is 2 week free trial.

Otherwise, there are various threads about dvd creation here. And possibly a script called rec2dvd (or have I imagined that one?).

I agree about VideoRedo but is there a Linux version?

Don't forget that basic (rough) editing can be done on the Toppy to remove leading and trailing sections and ads (using CutAds).

That may or may not be good enough for your needs, but will at least cut down the time taken to transfer / convert the file before more accurate editing.

Julie

My usual OS is ubuntu (10.04), dual-booting with Windows XP when needs be (rare) and sometimes running XP in a virtual machine under VirtualBox. I generally use VideoReDo which is acceptably fast even in a virtual machine. I hadn't tried OpenShot recently (didn't have much luck with it in earlier versions of ubuntu) but just installed it and yes, it works fine and reads .REC files directly and you can cut adds and use it to make a DVD but it's a bit slow.

Yes sorry guys, Linux compatible applications please.

Thanks Julie for that suggestion, I have not used that application, but thought if I got it wrong, I'd lose the original, I'd rather copy it off and mess around with it on my pc, then if it goes wrong, I an just copy it off again.

I'm using a combination of Handbrake and OpenShot at the moment, but it just seems daft having to convert to one formation, edit and convert back, why isn't it not possible to edit the raw file? OpenShot says it can edit TS files, but it didn't like the file I tried to import, yet it was fine with MKV files, .
I'm able to edit the MKV file, though the application isn't that intuitive, but once I had worked out how to cut sections out, then I have to export it to a VOB, (and then use another application to create the DVD).

One thing this has shown me is that I need a faster PC, I've got a AMD 64 X2 3800+ 4Gb of Ram, ok ya it is 5 years old now, but this decoding and encoding lark it taking AGES! Maybe New Year will bring a New PC a Quad Core would be nice!

Don't really understand it all, but just seems a lot of messing around, oh well, more investigation needed.

Fun Fun Fun...... Wink

That's not a problem. If you get it wrong, just use JoinAds to stick back together again, and have another go.

Julie

Maybe it's OS or program version-dependant? I tried OpenShot 1.1.3 under ubuntu 10.04 and just dragged a 550Mb .REC file into its project window then dragged it down to "Track 1" and used the razor tool to make the cuts. I chose File...Export Video and selected (from the "Simple" tab) DVD, DVD-PAL, DVD PAL Widescreen and Quality = "High". After a (fair) while a large .VOB was created.

I have a quad-core AMD Athlon with 8GB RAM but although OpenShot used each core in turn it only maxed out one core at a time for short bursts and total CPU usage (as reported by System Monitor) was 172% (which, divided by 4 = 43% of total CPU cycles). Memory usage was 680Mb before and went up to just over 800Mb while encoding so I shouldn't think either your processor or your RAM is a major limitation.

I think OpenShot's OK, now that I've tried it again and found that this version works, but I still prefer VideoReDo because it's basically like a more user-friendly version of ProjectX; it runs fast - even in a virtual machine - and you can very quickly jump from one section to another and mark edits using just the keyboard (instead of having to switch between mouse and keyboard). You can also use VideoReDo to create DVD menus and titles although there are other, free, programs that will take your .VOB files and do that for you. You know that you can make a virtual machine and try the free version of VideoReDo and just roll out another virtual machine when the time expires? Despite this, and being all for open-source programs, VideoReDo is one of the few programs that I have I actually bought.

@birdman - can you baby-step how to get it to run under WINE? I keep getting a window asking me to run the VideoReDo Configuration Wizard and if I answer "Yes" then WINE reports a problem and just repeats the cycle and if I answer "No" the dialogue box just disappears and nothign else happens. For this reason I run it in a virtual XP machine under VirtualBox and have a shared folder to transfer files between the virtual machine and my "real" machine.

Excellent suggestions, thank you, I do have a XP Virtual Machine already to run Windows only software, so I could try that.

I will have another go with OpenShot, I'll copy the file off the Toppy again, it might have corrupted, (but then it encoded to MKV fine, hum odd).
I think most of my issues here is not knowing how to use the application, so its very much 'user error' I am sure.

Its interesting to know that with all the computer power you have their (my dream machine!), it still takes ages to encode, maybe its not optimised for multi-core architectures?

I've never had much luck with WINE myself (prefer the bottled version!).

Thanks very much for your help and advice with this.

There must be a problem with the .rec file, I tried to import it into OpenShot and it says its a 5 Min file, (it should be 1 hour), it must be corrupt as the 2nd part imports fine. I've already converted the first part to mkv so I'll use that but I should be able to edit the 2nd part directly.

I just ran:
Quote:
wine VideoReDoPlus-2-5-6-512.exe

(I think). It's an old version, which might make a difference. I did it some time ago and have updated Linux (and hence wine) since then. It still works, but does have a few more oddities (all easily worked around).
