Can someone point me at some instructions for the [Up] patch - to set the USB id of a Toppy.
[Us] hard cods it to 1100, so is obvious.
How does [Up] work, though?
Thanks |

I can't remember seeing a [Up] patch. There is no reference to it on R2-D2's site. [Us] seems to be the only patch which changes the USB SerialNumber - thread:-

but you've probably read all that! |

Do you really have a requirement for both toppies to be permanently connected to windows?
If not, it will much simpler if you just lay a USB cable from each toppy to the pc and connect each up when required.

I have 4 Toppies, well 3 at the moment, since one is going to andyfras for repair.
All in different rooms
All networked so I can access them from the study
I need a way to check which one(s) I am connecting to.
So, basically yes, unless there are technical issues with the connections |

Use different marker pens to colour the usb connectors near the pc?
Even with the Up patch, I doubt that you will be able to have 4 toppies connected simultaneously to a pc as you would also need an application that can distinguish between the toppies.
The only way I think it would work is if you had two Slugs (or Asus'es) each with two toppies. Toppy access would then be via FTP.

When I say networked, I mean TCP/IP. Distance is far too great for USB, even if I wanted USB cables trailed around the house.
I have network points in most rooms, with concealed cabling.
Each Toppy has an IP-USB server box USB attached, and a cat5 linking the latter to the network.
PC plugged into the network with a single cable.
App on the PC simulates the USB connection across the Gigabit network.
Works beautifully, although it gets *very* confusing with the 4 machines.
TopManager and Antares support, I believe, multiple Toppies.
There are a couple of threads on this.
Hence the request.
Even 2 at a time would be an improvement, however I would like to try for more if possible.
However, at the end of the day, if it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. |

I think I understand - I must admit that I thought you were using USB to the pc.
You say that each toppy is connected to its own IP box so you shouldn't really need the Up patch (assuming you are accessing the toppy via ftp).
If however, you are just using the Cat5 to emulate a long USB cable then the Up patch may be relevent.
TopManager can support the four toppies - give each one a different connection record that specifies the IP address associated with the required toppy. Then select the required connection record to access that toppy via FTP (you probably want the "Indy FTP" option).
I've no idea how you will differentiate between the toppies when accessing recordings.

| Surely each IP-USB server box has it's own MAC address and can be given a fixed IP address which wouls allow you to identify the attached Toppy? |

Unfortunately the IP address of each server doesn't get involved at this level - to Windows, it just looks like the Toppies are locally connected USB devices.
I have to keep track of which one is connected and which directories to map it to.
Needless to say I've got it wrong a few times.
I'd much rather be able to just connect them and have TopManager (or whatever) sort it out for me.
However, if it doesn't work, then I'll have to keep on as I am......... |

Lateral thinking: how about creating an identifying file on each Toppy (e.g. in a folder in /Datafiles or /ProgramFiles) that you can look for once you've connected.

Sounds to me as though you need to automate the setting up of the "virtual USB" (assuming you only want to connect to one toppy at a time).
e.g.
1) Put 4 batch files on the desktop; one per toppy
2) Before using a toppy, click on the appropriate batch file
3) if using TopManager, then select/open the connection corresponding to that batch file

Indeed - that was going to be my suggestion to Geoff and qubits to allow TopManager/Antares to try and detect which Toppy was connected.
Obviously vulnerable to copying/deletion/corruption - an in-built serial number would be best, but from reading the threads, this doesn't exist.
Better would be an assigned USB id to distinguish between them, since at least that stays with the hardware, which brings me here! |

When I first started TopManager, I did consider having an identifying file on the toppy. However, I decided to forget it because the logic was too difficult to work out if the "wrong" toppy was connected.
My guess is that [Up] only switches between 1000 and 1100 i.e. it will only support two toppies. Suggest you pm R2-D2 and ask him.
