Hi Folks,

A Toppy.org Firmware Loader is available at: www.toppy.org.uk/~chunkywizard/TAPDownload/ToppyFirmwareLoader.zip

It loads the following recommended firmware onto the 5800, 5800t or 5810 from a Windows PC (32bit):

TF5800 and TF5800t
5.13.65BfBqCeCkCwCyEcEeEfEpErEsFGmHHeKtMhNfOtPPcRRaRhRpRsSSdSrStSyT2TdTfTpTsXpXw (+ De and Re if you select them)

TF5810
5.15.09AfBfBqC0CeCkCwEcEfEgEmEpErEsEvFGmHHeKtMhNfOtPcRRaRhRmRpRsSSdSfSrSxTdTfTpTqTtXw (+De if you select it)

The loader uses the FwLoad TAP for loading firmwares. For more information on FwLoad options to add patches to the Recommended Firmware see the FWLoad thread.

This post will be updated whenever changes are made to the firmware to add newly developed essential patches. Many thanks to the stirling work of R2-D2 for the patches, Firebird for HDFW and to EMJB for the Installer/ Fwload technology.

Cheers

CW

Top work guys! Hopefully Nigel will see the benefit of this to the vast majority of users and be able to promote on the main site properly.

Much as I admire the provision of a 'recommended' firmware as an alternative to the the crippleware that people often fall for, I find the specification of MyStuff ad nauseam (including the disclaimer-like qualifications) rather pointless. It'd be far more useful to be inclusive (rather than an implicit 'the hell with those who don't use Mystuff' and the 'holier-than-thou' attitude) to say something along the lines:

Here are the 'recommended' firmwares;
for people not using any EPG TAPs:toppy.tfd
for MyStuff users: toppy-mystuff.tfd
for EPGN users: toppy-epgn.tfd
for Jag users: toppy-jag.tfd
etc...

Why not drop the meaningless patch id tosh that does nothing but to confuse. MyInfo and/or HDFW are far better tools to inform people on the patched nature of their firmware and I'd like to see them promoted widely with ALL firmware/patch related stuff.

Remember: Those who "know" don't want to see all that bumf, and those who "don't know" wouldn't need to!

I will get round to updating this on the firmware page, just as soon as I have a spare moment; I've not even managed to get a PC set up to check out the updater yet, so I don't know what prerequisites there are for using it, or how the process is actually done - which is actually just as important, if we're directing people to install another piece of software.

(a) CW and EMJB have single-handedly(?) made the tools, (b) those tools are freely modifiable for specific uses by anybody else, and (c) they've put the effort into also making something less MyStuff-oriented for those of a stubborn disposition. They should be commended on their hard work and valued efforts for the community.

Those who have chosen to not make any concrete or positive contribution to this worthy objective (and just seem to want to moan about things for moaning's sake) should maybe consider these facts before posting petty (and annoying!) criticisms.

Mentioning that the installer is no longer specific to MyStuff is actually rather important at this stage. Those that know its heritage might otherwise assume that it and the firmware it installs is specific to MyStuff.

Replacing the big patch string in the download link with the version number might be preferable though. It's somewhat intimidating and could be shown in the history area (with links to the patch decipherer).

For anyone that is interested a Toppy.org version of the (former MyStuff) Firmware Loader

I tried it but had some problems.

I'm using Vista PC with a TF5810 with no TAPs, and already have working Topfield tools installed (Altair, TFDN_USB etc).

When I ran the installer initially the 5810 wasn't switched on, and the installer never prompted me to do so. The update attempt ended in failure. I'd suggest messages that say when the Toppy should be connected, and when it should be switched on.

I switched on the Toppy and tried again, choosing Windows Vista and direct USB connection. It apparently connected and I was asking if I had a 5800/5800t, and if I wanted the De patch.

The firmware was then downloaded and there was an attempt to install it. I then briefly saw a message about being unable to reboot the Toppy, followed with a screen starting "Congratulations on your successful Firmware installation...".

I then got "Access violation at address 004D1B60 in module "Setup.exe". Write of address 004D1B60." when I clicked on "Click here to close Installer". I couldn't close the installer and had to resort to TaskMgr to kill it.

It hadn't installed the firmware, even after I manually switched the Toppy off and on. (Nothing copied to Toppy).

On the 3rd attempt it couldn't establish communications. Repeated this a couple of times more.

On about the 6th attempt I got a repeat of attempt 2, where it ended up saying the firmware was installed but didn't reboot the Toppy. This time however there was no Access violation on exit, but I did get "This program might not have installed correctly" from the Vista "Program Compatibility Assistant".

On switching the Toppy off and on again I got some progress, with the Auto Start FWLoad.tap running. Unfortunately this froze at "INSTALLING NEW FIRMWARE (Using FwLoad B3) Identifying patches to be applied". I eventually power cycled.

Here is the log for attempt 6, as that is the closest I have had to success.

Hi DX

Sorry you had issues with this. I have just checked that there is no problems with the installer package and it runs fine for me on XP SP3 talking to my 5800. We need EMJB's help here as he runs Vista and might be able to work out what's gone on. From the log you gave everything seems to be fine, but the hang on reboot is worrying. EMJB did do a small tweak to FwLoad a week or so ago and I wonder if it is that that is causing the hang. Unfortunately we don't have a 5810 to test on although FwLoad B2 was run on the 5810 a lot and worked fine.

If anyone else with a 5810 is feeling brave can you try the Firmware Loader and see if it works for you?

Cheers

CW

@DX,

Sorry you are having problems, apparently with both the PC application and the FwLoad TAP, though the former might be causing the latter.

As a first step, can you please tell me what files you have on the Toppy in /ProgramFiles/InstallerFirmware/ and /ProgramFiles/InstallerFirmware/Remove using Altair?

In /ProgramFiles/InstallerFirmware/
aXeL.tfd (3KB 2007-10-30 18:55)
Recommended.tfd (1960KB 1009-02-17 13:21)

In /ProgramFiles/InstallerFirmware/Remove
[De] DescExt_06_Genre.tfp (149KB 2009-01-31 16:22)

FYI:
It's Vista Ultimate SP1 with all current Windows Updates applied. User Access Control is on.

The Topfield tools were downloaded from www.topfield.co.uk late last year. File versions -Altair is 1.2.5.0, TFDN_USB is 1.0.0.1, TfDll.dll is 1.0.0.5, TfBulk.sys is 4.7.5.31. They all live in \Program Files\Topfield.

I've had no problems with using either Altair or TFDN_USB on this setup.

For the avoidance of doubt I was just doing this as a test so this isn't an urgent problem as far as I'm concerned. If there is anything else you want me to try let me know, either here or by PM if you would rather pursue it offline.

Thanks for testing. As PCs are all different we rely on user feedback like this. Normally we don't see issues like this, the firmware loader has been downloaded over 1000 times and the installer (which uses the same method) over 4000 times. Still we will try to get to the bottom of it!

Thanks for the information provided - should be very useful. Can't see anything obviously wrong off-hand, but will look at moreclosely this evening.

@DX,

Looking through your log file everything seems to have run on that occasion as I would have expected at the PC end. There is a known problem with rebooting the 5810 and I thought CW had changed the "sucess" message to reflect this.

Vista's prection mechanisms do seem to lead to some funny occurences at times, but I cannot explain the inconsistent behaviour. While I have Vista, it is the Home Premium version, and I have yet to try a direct USB connection. Have you a laptop by any chance? They often seem to have problems with Toppy communication.

At the Toppy end I'm wondering whther FwLoad doesn't like removing patches without adding any. I must say I have never tested this condition, so will have a look at the code to see if I can find anything odd.

I would think a message saying something like "To update the firmware please switch off the Toppy, wait 30 seconds, and switch on again" would do in this case.

It's a desktop (Pentium Dual CPU E2180 2GHz, 4GB Memory). I haven't seen any communication problems using the Topfield tools.
