Major problem though...... I don't get any audio when connected through HDMI. It works fine on PS3 on same cable and Input on TV settings. As it works for the PS3 I presume it's the topfield at fault. Any ideas?!?!?!?

Hdmi audio works fine for me on a sony LCD........ and a samsung

Bugs:

  • If a programme to be recorded starts whilst playing back an existing file, playback of the recorded file will end without explanation;
  • Numerous audio drop-outs without corresponding video corruption - this may be a problem with the signal strength of my aerial, but I suspect that the problem lies with the TF5810;
  • When trying to resolve a recording conflict, the only suggested option given was to record a programme that had already finished. Assuming this was offered because the programme had been buffered I went with the suggestion and the later recording was cancelled - but the earlier programme (now in the past) was never actually saved.

Limitations/Improvements:

  • No 'bookmark' ability to (optionally) return to the last watched time in a recording;
  • It would be nice to default to the all-channels EPG rather than the single-channel EPG ...
  • ... likewise, the option to have a full-screen EPG (without picture) with more than four channels listed would be helpful.
  • Advert skip (instantly jump forwards by three minutes) would be useful.

Bugs:
  • The transport buttons (number 32 and 33 in the user manual), which are supposed to skip to the start or end of a recording, do nothing.

(It's unclear to me what use skipping to the end of a recording would be, since you'd just be dumped back to the playback-selection menu - but whatever the buttons are supposed to do, they actually appear to do nothing!)

Improvements:

  • Pressing the Yellow/Next Day option from the multi-channel EPG moves to the current time on the next day, rather than forward by 24 hours.

This means much scrolling around if I want to record programmes on following days all at 9pm, unless the current time is around 9pm.

Moving forwards and backwards by 24 hours would be much more intuitive.

  • The rescheduling function doesn't understand the "+1" channels in order to find an uncontended recording slot.

  • There is no indication of if (or when) a recording has been watched (or how much of a recording has been watched - which would link into the ability to resume playback from the last watched time)

Bug:

  • A failed recording always seems to leave an entry in the Timer Settings to record BBC1 for the length of the failed recording at the time of the failed recording... which then blocks further attempts to resolve the conflict!

  • If dropping to standby mode (or, failing that, disabling the A/V outputs and turning off the front panel display) isn't possible whilst recording (which it should be!) then the option should at least be given, on pressing the power button, to power-down once the current recording is completed.

This is the same as the TF5800 (unpatched Smile): the playback ends immediately and then you are given the reason in the form of the "A recording is starting" (new style "CYR") prompt.

No 'bookmark' ability to (optionally) return to the last watched time in a recording;
Again, the same as the TF5800: there are two "bookmark" mechanisms. Press Play rather than OK on a recording in the archive and you will be taken to the last watched position ("resume"). Press Play while playing back a recording to open the playback search bar and you can set a large number of your own bookmarks using the green button (and the yellow button to navigate between them). On the TF5810 you can have 48 bookmarks.

It would be nice to default to the all-channels EPG rather than the single-channel EPG ...
The EPG replacement TAPs really show up the native EPG, and it would seem to be quite unlikely there will be major changes to it (the TF5810 adds only a couple of very minor improvements, apart from the graphical overhaul).
Quote:
... likewise, the option to have a full-screen EPG (without picture) with more than four channels listed would be helpful.
The grid view has a couple of extra navigation features not found on the TF5800: you can scroll forwards and backwards by four channels by pressing the >> and << buttons, and you can jump to a particular channel by typing the channel number (LCN) which will appear in the top left of the grid as you type (and press OK once you've typed all the digits if you're impatient)
Quote:
Advert skip (instantly jump forwards by three minutes) would be useful.
Open the playback search bar and the yellow button will skip forwards 30 seconds if there are no bookmarks set.

I think you'll find it skips to the start of the EPG on the next day (so around midnight), although sometimes (in the grid view) it does seem to not land on the first programme of the day.
Quote:
The rescheduling function doesn't understand the "+1" channels in order to find an uncontended recording slot.
That may be due to the broadcaster not identifying the programmes as being in the same series.

Yes, it should be much clearer, but actually leaving the "Do you want to power off?" prompt on screen (and not choosing an option) actually achieves this.

Wow, thanks - that's really useful information!

With these tips in mind, the TF5810 seems a lot more usable than before... if they can fix the problem whereby a new recording starting interrupts recorded playback as well, then I think that'd fix my last real remaining complaint Very Happy

They do actually work. But you need the playback search bar open first (press Play while playing back a recording). And I've just found a use for jumping to the end: I've just trimmed a runaway recording by going to the bookmark at the end of the real recording (thanks to AccurateBM), pressing White, then pressing Next (to go to the end), then pressing Blue to complete the cut.

"Next" and "Prev" are the buttons above Green and Yellow (they also rotate the PiP around the screen).

On the TF5800 these were lost to the PiP and Text buttons, due to having to move the P+/- and V+/- off the arrow buttons for UK requirements. The TF5810 has a new remote with loads of buttons so these (and others) reappear.

5810 arrived on Monday. Set up a number of series links.

Monday's 2 recordings worked ok.

On tuesday, I realised that the number of timed recordings was
greater than 16 so removed a couple of recordings to get below 16.
(wasn't sure if the 16 limit referred to the total number
of different series linked programs.)

Sorted the timer list into time order. Unit left in standby.

Tuesday evening: First 2 recordings did not start.

Emmerdale at 19:00 and Eastenders at 19:30.

Holby at 20:00 worked ok.

Unit left in standby all this time.

After 21:00 checked timer list. Next tuesdays entries were there but in
reverse time order. ie holby 20:00, eastenders 19:30, emmerdale 19:00.

Sort put them back correctly.

Not a very good start !!!!

TU-CTH100 worked ok - very useful standby m/c.

Chris

Update:
******

19/3 Unit left in standby after above sort.
Emmerdale 19:00 wednesday recorded ok.

20/3 Checked timer settings - emmerdale missing 26/3, but
was in EPG with SL flag.
Appeared in timer settings a few minutes later but was
positioned after an entry for 27/3. Sort on time fixed it.
itv1 19:00 recorded ok
bbc1 20:00 recorded ok
bbc1 21:00 recorded ok
itv1 21:00 failed to record.
Left unit in standby throughout. At 21:00 the display was itv1.
Before switching unit on as 22:15 to check recordings noticed a tiny symbol
flashing on display - looked liked a square with an "x" in the top half segment. (Now worked this one out with a magnifying glass - it's a clock symbol)
The appauling manual has no section on the tf5810 display. If there is
then I can't find it.

Is it possible to check both tuners for signal quality ????

21/3 Checked timer settings - a new SL has appeared by magic.
more4 06:00 180 mins 22/03 - More4 preview
I've nothing else remotely linked to this.

Another little gem - I've got time shifting set to NO but I can still rewind live tv.

Set up bbc2 and itv1 SL for 14:00 today - worked ok. Indeed itv1 didn't start until nearly 14:05 but caught the beginning of the program.

Checked timer settings - eastenders SL has disappeared.
Checked EPG - No SL on eastenders and itv1 at 17:30 is broadcasting Q PM radio !!!!

I've not even watched a recording yet - just set up some SL's and monitored its progress. The phrase useless springs to mind.

22/3 Worked ok
23/3 Worked ok - including concurrent recordings bbc1/itv1 20:00

24/3 Checked timer settings - one has appeared between 30th and 31st march for 29th march 09:45 duration 1320 minutes. Its on channel 45, lottery Xtra - rather apt.
emmerdale 19:00 worked ok.
unit switched on at 19:59, bbc1, for eastenders but did not record, Timer icon was flashing but no red REC indicator. Checked timer settings at 20:50 - entry still there for 20:00-20:30

25/3 above entry now gone. All SL timers from Sunday onwards are 1 hour early - BST. (Time adjusted ok automatically for BST and timers now ok.)
itv1 19:00 1hr worked ok
bbc1 19:30 1/2 hr worked ok
bbc1 20:00 1hr worked ok

26/3 Checked timer settings - another phantom series link has appeared. Fri 28th March 17:45 Newsbeat - a radio1 program linked to eastenders !!!

27/3 recorded itv1 21:00 1hr ok
failed to record bbc1 21:00. (Last thursday bbc1 ok itv1 fail.)

Eastenders now has a SL for Film4 02/04 2hr

Just pushing thru' my updates incase nobody is seeing them.

@ccs: Looks like you're not too happy with your 5810! Why don't you simply sell it, scrap it, install a different firmware on it or put up with it - silently - but stop regurgitating your old posts. Failing that make your findings shorter and more concise. Bugs aren't supposed to be long-winded "anecdotal" diary of events; that would be suitable if, under the Consumer Act, you want to return the product and get your money back from the supplier. Then detail would backup your claim for the product not being "fit for purpose". For alternative methods of venting your anger see Consumer Direct.
