I was reading one of the Toppy discussions earlier regarding converting .rec files to mpg ready convert and to burn onto DVD as a DVD. This is something that I wanted to do but I have had a thought while i am sat here at work. Has anyone who has got a xbox 360 and who uses it as their dvd player tried burning mpg files, converted from .rec files from the toppy, to a Data DVD and tried playing them straight from that source?

I realise this might be quiet a strange one to ask but I was just interested?

I will try it tonight nonetheless and report on how I got on.

Roll on 530pm

Just for info

I take files from Toppy, convert into MPEG format, then flush through DIVX converter to compress, then wirelessly FTP to XBOX [not 360] which plays them really well.

Cheers. I have mine (360) setup to play movies etc from a central server but as I have limited space currently I wanted to back these files (from toppy) to a dvd and have them on file, just incase of hardware failure etc.

When you say you flush them through a divx convertor is that using tversity ?

What do you use to convert to mpeg?

1. T/fer files from Toppy using Altair
2. Use Stream clip to convert from .rec to .mpeg [http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html]
3. use either TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress or XXX to convert to DIVX

Or use my toppy2go scripts to go from rec to avi. I should extend these scripts to offer mpeg as an output format as it is one of the intermediate steps anyway.

I have recently upgraded to an xbox 360 from a chipped xbox with XBMC. I will have a look to see if they play on the 360 edition but not sure it will.

I will have to wait to get home to try all these out. My goal is to back up my recordings to dvd as data and play them from dvd (in xbox) as data.

can I also ask, im sure this may have been covered before.

What is the average size you get a .REC film which is about 3gb down to when you convert to .avi or mpg. Currently mine are coming out about the same size and wondered if you can get them smaller simmilar to a dvd rip? which is usually about 700mb to 1gb??

I can get files down from 3Gb to about 1Gb / 700 Mb with picture quality set to one from highest setting if that helps - this is why I do to to save space but not at the expense of quality

After spending all evening trying to get it working, Using MPEG_Streamclip and TMPGEnc 4.0 it wasnt working then i realised the xbox wouldnt play the files I had encoded because I had set was wrong, once i set it to the coreect one (16:9) the xbox then would read them. I have burnt them to a dvd as data and so far it is playing the films without any problems. The sound is good and everything seems sync'd.
