Could someone write a short description about MEI and TAPs that use/generate MEI. I don't have time to study it from other threads, I just add TAPs into TAPWorld...

This MEI stuff seems to be a big thing currently in UK

MEI is a format for storing EPG data in a file on a Toppy. It is separate from the Toppy's own EIT tables, and does not have the same size restrictions.

There are currently 2 ways to generate MEI using external EPG data: my own MEI application (uses an XMLTV file as source, and runs only in Windows) and wooders rt2mei, which is a platform independant PHP script, but is restricted to use in the UK as it harvests directly from www.radiotimes.com. The MEI file generated by either app needs to be uploaded to Toppy by altair or similar. This may be inconvenient, and needs to be regularly updated, but has the benefit in that the MEI file is very complete.

There are also currently 2 TAPs that generate an MEI file by harvesting the EPG data broadcast: bdb's EPG_Extender and DX's eit2mei. MEI files generated by these TAPs are likely to be less complete than either of those above, however they have the benefit that they are native to the Toppy, and no external connection is required.

There are a number of TAPs that currently use an MEI file:
    * MyStuff can use MEI as EPG source
    * MEISearch can use MEI as EPG source
    * mei2eit can upload MEI into Toppy's EIT tables
    * mei2archive can update recordings with MEI descriptions

Apologies if I omitted anyone's TAP.

MEI will be superceeded by the TIE format, details are in this thread: http://www.toppy.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3432

You might find the diagram in http://www.toppy.org.uk/documents/1-EPG3.pdf helpful.
