I should have taken the advice to replace capacitors when I started using Toppy again.

It had been working ok so never got round to it but came back from a 2 week holiday to find it had frozen and it now just keeps rebooting or freezing after about 30 seconds. HDD spins up for 10 seconds or so then either reboots or freezes and just sits there with frozen TV picture on screen.

Checked voltages and 5V is low (4.3V) and 12V is high didn’t bother going any further and is now unplugged.

Been onto Andy’s web site but can’t see how to purchase a kit and it also says

Rebooting - U20 regulator m'board - Tab should measure 1.5V, if not, replace with LD1117DT (left side of cardslot)

Would it be a good idea to get one of these at the same time or replace caps and see how it goes?

Installed the kit and sadly it made no difference it would either reboot or freeze.

Installed the no settings firmware and it stopped crashing till a scan was done then off it went again.

Reloaded no settings firmware and deleted the settings folder before doing a scan. It stopped crashing and did a verify files and folders. Great I thought its working till it finished and I found all the recordings had gone.

So months of recordings gone but at least it’s now working with a repaired PSU.

Your signature is 10 years out of date - "latest" patches and taps would help.

See mine for minimum requirements. (nb mne's a 5810.)

MyStuff installer is all you really need.

I wish to thank everyone for the advice and the PMs.

To be honest the Toppy only has another 12 days as our little village now has FTTP and Virgin are coming so it will be relegated to the loft again and non of the recordings were that important.

Consider donating your Toppy to Andyfras or selling it since it sounds unlikely that you'll ever use it again. Bits of it could go on to make four other Toppies life a longer, healthier life.

(Typing this as I look at my Colorado T1000e Travan tape backup that hasn't been fired up in 15 years).

Thanks for the thought, but I've got about 10 Toppies in various states from fully working to inoperable, so I haven't room for any more. As there are very few repairs being requested currently, I'm considering reducing my stock of Toppies kept for spares.
