Hi.

Can anyone recommend a fan for fitting to either a 5800 or 5810 to help with cooling?

Old posts I've found seem to have out of date links and images.

What I have seen is either a fan below the HDD or one under the top cover vents.

Also which connector would I need to get power to the fan?

I do have a fairly small 12v fan from a type 1 BT visions box that might work.

Thanks

I've reinstated my Toppy fan page for information only

http://www.admac.myzen.co.uk/toppy_fan/

You only need one fan running at a slow speed (1000 rpm) to achieve enough cooling. In the above web page the second small fan was unnecessary. It became noisy after a while and was removed. If the fan runs too fast you will notice the "wind" noise.

The cable tie method of attachment to the lid is more suited to a 5800 which has a lot more ventilation slots.

Its possible to reduce the speed of a fan by running it at a lower voltage. Rewiring the Molex connector to the fan can give you 5V, 7V or 12V

Ok great.

It would appear that fan for example is still available

and something like this

I've updated my post on fitting fans to both my 5800's with a link to a current version of the fan I used ............. 7 years ago Shocked Toppies and fans are still going strong Cool

Thanks for that. Great to hear.

I think I need to decide on a fan and see it before working out which cable/plug adaptor I need to get the power from, not enough pictures I can't find to work it out.

I gather a Molex 4 pin male to female that adds a tap off of a 3 or 2 pin fan male Or female?

Ie this is a 3 pin male fan plug

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/ocuk-value-power-adapter-3-pin-fan-power-to-4-pin-molex-adapter-rb-523-cb-113-ok.html

But this fan for example on days 3 pin, not if the plug is male or female Confused

Ok with much Google searching I'm sure I've worked it out.
Just unfamiliar with the connections until I see them Smile

It shows the connector on the fan here

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.caseking.de/en/noctua-nf-r8-redux-1200-80mm-luna-030.html%3Ftemplate%3Damp

I'm assume this fits the power adaptor in my last reply above?

This is the sort of connector you need:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252494529438

I've just noticed that it's the same as the Overclockers link above , but at a much lower price.

If you want it to run slower, snip the black fan lead at the Molex and attach it to the red on the Molex. That will provide 7V (12V-5V). If that's still too fast, reconnect the black lead, then move the red fan lead to the red on the Molex

Thanks. I've ordered an 80mm fan that says 1200 rpm.

Only issue I've since thought of is it's 25mm thick, should be fine for the 8500 but looks to thick for the 5810, to mount under the top cover.

Do you mean red fan lead to another colour, I'm assuming red is already to red?

It will almost certainly come with the red fan wire connected to the yellow Molex (12V).

Prior to doing this modification which is the best way/Tap to read the HDD temperature? It would be nice to know how this lowers it.

FSCheck and HDDInfo both show disk temperature.

By the way, if the fan is fitted to the top cover I had mine blowing out.

FSCheck doesn't for some reason. I'll have to try HDDinfo

While I was at it I also got a fan for a 5800, which I intend to have doing just that.

For the 5810 with less vents and less room where there are vents, so I was going to try a fan under the HDD, not sure to try blowing in or out first.

Heat goes up so try in first...
