Every bl**dy autumn the leaves fall and sooner or later a MUX or another will go down at Crystal Palace causing all my recordings to corrupt themselves.
Unfortunately this happened once more, just as I was about to retire the Toppy with an almost full 1TB disk and move on to a HD PVR. I ran TopHDRW and performed a filesystem check, only to watch it reporting many hundreds of 'fixes' like these:
Fixed: Files - File '\DataFiles\Comedy\8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown_170922.rec' is shorter than expected : changed size from 1,21 GB to 0 B
I opted to exit, rather than writing the files on the disk and risking a major domestic crisis.
Is there a way to recover all these recordings? What steps should I follow? I recall I was able to recover corrupted recordings in the past using TopHDRW, but there were also occasions where they were completely lost. |

Sending the disk to Geoff Bacon is your best option. |

Thank you both,
I have formatted the disk on the toppy and I'm now scanning it with TopHDRW to see what it might find. It should finish some time late afternoon.
I must say this catastrophic failure of the fs when the signal goes wobbly is the Achilles heel of this otherwise much loved PVR.
Off to read EMJB's notes on migrating to an OpenVix box now - thank you EMJB for your work on migrating to another PVR! |

TopfHDRW is not going to do a good job of recovering recordings - suggest you send it to me as I can still recover it after it has been reformatted (but obviously not ideal).
Also, my TDM program can pick up "lost" directories - this means that, if you auto file, the bulk of the recordings will be given their original names (TopfHDRW is going to generate hundreds of file name along the lines of File0***.rec)
Your choice

According to Freeview the problem was/is caused by the atmospheric conditions at the moment.

Thanks Geoff, yes, it has recovered some recordings, loads of fragments it seems. None appears to be complete. It says 572.8 MB free, when the toppy was showing 386 MB free before it crashed.
I had a number of folders for autosaving, but none of that is of course recovered.
With a new box soon to be ordered capable of recording in HD the domestic may be avoided - at least postponed for now. |

Good catch, I googled but didn't find anything about it. Indeed, it happens every year around this time in the season. |

I would expect to pick up more recordings than that
